Keep in mind that typically, the Aussie model year is one year ahead of ours. Their bugeyes were 01 models, and thus the linked 06 model would most likely be an 07 here in the states.

Strong motor...very strong.
There was a 5th gear grind on the some early 03 models, there are no other tranny problems. I don't know how rumors start on this board that the tranny sucks. There are several people running low 10's on stock motor and tranny.

I don't think its a rumor..Its seems like once the high hp EVOs get a good clutch, then after a while the trans suffers.
They had many more tran problems when they first came out...But even to this day, to some extent the trans tends to be the weak spot... when ur tryyin to hit 500+ hp, without any problems.
My older brother has his 600+ hp GT35 EVO..its a 04 with 14K on the clock..the trans is having a few problems
I have driven the car recently, it seems like the 1-2, 2-3 syncros

i think its safe to say that there are NO major problems with the STi. only a group of small things that irritate us.

for me, one thing that has been getting on my nerves is the plastic panels rattling. i can't complain considering what i've done to the car and considering how i drive it.

My six speed tranny has a blown front diff, no synchro's in 1st or 4th left at all.

Don't let the above mislead you, the car competed a complete Auto X season with 3 drivers being totally abused running well over 300whp so for it to still actually shift is amazing.

As soon as I finish this next batch of tuning on the motor the tranny is being yanked and the diff replaced and a compitition gearset is going in so all will be cherry again.

Hear are the weaknesses,
Stock springs, should of been given the Sti pink springs from japan.
Turbo, it is pretty much maxed out at 320 whp.
Same for injectors.
Piston design, the ring landings are too close to the top of the piston, the motor is strong, there is a guy running 513 whp on that motor stock everything. The failures that have happened on most cars, were in the ring landings. That being said there have not been a lot of failures.

That would all depend on the gas and dyno being used.

I actually don't think the STI has to many short comings in it's stock form, like anything it could use more power and when doing so there will be problems with certain things (Pistons etc) much the same as the EVO (Head studs, clutch).

My STi rattles in the dash and has done so since day 1. Just modify the exhaust and you'll be fine.

I'm not saying the EVO is god because it isn't. I'm just saying if you look around at the majority of shop cars that have 500hp to 600whp in their Evo's the tranny is stock. Now this is no dog on the STI, but how many are running around with that kind of power? Not many. My point is the more power your putting to the ground the more stress your going to have on the tranny. I'm not saying which tranny is better because I personally haven't driven the STI. I just think the EVO tranny gets a bad rap for no real reason. All the shops praise the tranny as the most stout thing on the car which is saying alot if you consider how strong the engine is. Now if you want to talk about ****ty tranny's look at the DSM's.
