What are major problems with STI?
I am pretty sure this has already been discussed, but I would like to know from people that have the car and not dealerships or EVO owners. What is the biggest problem you have with your STI's. I am looking to trade for an STI. ex. EVO biggest problem in my opinion is TRANNY!!!! Sick of Mitsubishi TRANNY's. Thanks for your posts back. Do not want to start a war, just want some info. Thanks.

Subaru 6 speed - best tranny ever !
the evo can get more power from the block then the 2.5, but the tranny in the evo cannot handle it
I got my STi for the transmission alone

Thanks for the email back. I know how touchy this thread can be. I agree with you. I have a 97 gst that my tranny went out on. I have this 03 Evo and now the tranny grinds in 5th gear after shifting from 4th with high rpms. I have about 19k and spent close to 35k all together on buying the vehicle. There is a bulletin out for the 5th gear synchros. It is very disappointing. Very!!
How is the 2.5 with adding power. I have heard good and bad. But again this is from people that do not have this vehicle. Again thanks to all that reply.

do you mean maxed out with the evo or sti? think you mean evo.
what is max power and durability with ej25 before you worry? Just boltons? Turbo swapping? At what point do you worry. do you ever have to worry about the tranny in STI?
Tired of mitsu and there tranny excuses!!!!!!
thanks for the reply.

No he means the STI. The stock turbo and injectors are basicaly maxed to performance... plus why would ya want to go anymore on STOCK stuff...bla! Bigger turbo and injectors!..lol
I love my sti. I used to have an 03' wrx... People told me that the tranny was made of glass... I NEVER had a problem with the car... but I also never dumped the clutch, I don't do stupid crap like that in my car. So far my sti is awesome. Love the power, but I think it's pretty slow now, that or I am just used to it, so I need to get it tuned and put my tbe back on.

STi's got a pretty damn solid tranny. Pretty solid motor too. Doesn't like nitrous oxide though. As far as modding your fuel system, it's not a bad idea if you mod more than TBE and EM. Best way to mod though is to start out with some form of engine management, and then go turboback exhaust, and then whatever you want. With the TBE and EM though, you should be pretty happy with the power levels.

Nitrous oxide should NOT be used on an STi with stock pistons. The casting process used makes them highly susceptible to the kind of detonation nitrous produces. Detonation on gas = bad. Det with nitrous = catastrophic.
03blueevo8, the STi responds VERY well to bolt-ons and tuning, and moderate turbo upgrades. It's when you start going nuts and aiming for 450+ whp that it starts giving way to the Evo motor. Just the nature of the manifold design. If you want 300-350 whp though, it's perfect.
