STi fluid recommendations?

Howdy,

I just picked up a '05 STi with around 36k miles and thought it'd be good to change the fluids to make sure I'm up to date on maintenance. Can anyone offer recommendations for the following fluids and/or local places to pick them up?

Differential fluid
Transmission fluid
Engine oil

I'll probably be going with Mobil 1 Synthetic in the engine unless there's a compelling reason to use something else, but the other fluids I don't know anything about. I've used the Search feature and haven't found much, so any input is appreciated. Thanks.

I've never changed my tranny fluid myself, and that's the same fluid as the front diff. All I know is that you don't want to use synthetic. For my rear diff I used redline oil, and for my motor I just go over to Costco and grab a pack of Mobil 1.

Go read iwsti.com. Except for the the engine oil, it seems that everyone has gone back to the Dino fluids, aka Subaru fluids. There is a nice talk about hearing grinds with aftermarket fluids, but at the same time those who are hardcore racers have only used dino fluids and still haven't recieved a single grind even after 70k miles. There alot of people who say that if you go back to the Dino fluids the grinds disappear. I'm not verifying people's claims, but I'm starting to run into the same problems with everyone there(so I'm thinking about trying what they recommend).

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll keep the above info in mind.

I'll definitely check out iwsti.com. I'm actually perfectly fine with using the stock Subaru fluids, but just figured I'd ask to make sure there wasn't an overwhelming consensus not to (as there has sometimes been with other cars).

Thanks again.

I've had to replace two STi Rear diffs because the owners did not use Subaru-approved oil.
Very costly mistake to make.

in your tranny be sure not to use full synth, I have 110K miles on my STI, and Ive already had to have my tranny overhauled once. I used synth in my tranny and by 20K miles I had the 4-5 gear grind people talk about with the 6 speeds. had it rebuilt by Rob at Roo's tranny/diff, hes the guy who rebuilds all the trannys for gruppe-s and was a tech at Carlson that has been thought the Subaru 6speed course. He informed me that the ideal mix was full mineral tranny fluid with 3/4 quart GM synchromesh fluid. since his rebuild Ive had about 40K hard driven miles and not a single gripe from the 4-5 upshift, so the gear oil+3/4 quart GM syncromesh FTW

Ok, thanks guys! Guess I'll stick with the Subaru stuff. Haven't had any grinds from the transmission yet so I'll probably either not change the transmission fluid or just go with whatever Subaru sells. Thanks again.
