PLEASE HELP!!!: 04 USDM STI Engine Question

I am thinking about purchasing a used 04 STI engine that is still (from what I gather on the phone) in good shape with the exception that the car was in a front end collision.

according to the guy the timing belt cover and exhaust cam sproket was damaged due to the impact.

he has already purchase the pieces that were broken (out side) and wants to sell it to me for a pretty damn good price (from what I think) including everything else I'll need for my swap. It will include the following: Complete engine (with damange ), every wire/sensor that is in this car that is attached to the main harness uncut, ABS compressor, ECU, gauge cluster - $3K. (FYI: I've already got a complete JDM STI driveline sitting at home) + Complete STI HVAC system

he is sending the pictures to me so I haven't been able to see it yet

My question is if the valves are bent due to this impact is the US STI engine (like the WRX) shim adjusted for valves...etc.? or can I just buy new US STI valves take the old ones out and replace them with the new ones and get it back up and running?

I'm hoping to be able to perform a leak down test on this engine once I get it but I won't go ahead with it until I get some pictures you know?

Jon

I would not buy an engine with broket cam sprockets. There is a potential head damage as well if the cam was physically pushed back. Even a bit.

The STI has shimless heads. If the camsprocket is broken, you can bet there are bent valves. The heads will need to be machined, the sodium filld valves on the STi are not cheap, new cam gears, timing belt, covers, headbolts or ARP studs, gaskets up the ***......The head work performed......It could run a grand to fix it.
That motor from canada is a bad idea, especially shipping to the islands.

Just our $.02

We see it all the time, good luck.

this isn't from canada.

it's from the neighbor island... I've got a blurry picture of what is broken.

the gear looks like it got pushed back off of the cam shaft.

I still have to sort out some issues with this guy since the pictures he showed me didn't have an intake manifold... I'm hoping the shop that was working on it just took it off.

Is the STI engine considered a Non-Interference engine? How do I find out

Valves can hit each other. Valves could hit the piston. So no, it is not non-interference engine.

I thought so but I wasn't sure and the FSM didn't exactly say that it was an INTERFERENCE type engine.

thanks Alex,

Jon
