I am looking at buying a 04 STI with some mods...
I need some help here. The owner says the previous guy did all the engine work, turbos suspension. Well, I know he was on here prior to him selling the car. His name was Hunter and he lived in the San Fran area I guess. I am trying find out if the engine was indeed built up to handle the extra power. In the parts list I didn't see any pistons or rods listed so how would someone build up the 2.5L engine with just a Cosworth Piston Ring set and ARP head stud kit?
Feel free to chime in on this. I don't know that much about the Subaru STI but another thing I was told is they commonly misfire from the factory.

Post his mod list - I don't know that people ever rebuilt a motor with JUST rings and the head studs. I mean you COULD, if the rings failed but most people would spend the extra 300 bucks to throw in forged pistons while they were at it.
Looking at his project thread which states a "safe 390whp tune" I don't think there's much problem with an STI with 500 horsepower, as so many people with even bigger power setups on the stock motor have 30, 40, 50k miles on their builds. It really depends on how the driver thrashed the car and that's up to you to decide.
Just keep around $4000 in cash laying around to rebuild the shortblock in case something happens.

Sorry for posting this in a few locations. I am talking to the owner and I wasn't sure how fast I would get a response. Some forums don't have people that check them very often. Here is what was listed.

Several of the mods in that list are spelled wrong or incomplete ("injector - $220" huh?). And who includes "30k service" as a mod? or "tune suspension"
The wording of the mod list leads me to believe whoever typed that list is not that knowledgeable about Subarus, or has been around performance cars that much - usually people will list their mods in a very concise and straightforward format, newbies will give you the longest list possible, documenting all the insignificants. I don't want to make assumptions or be prejudiced, but if it were my money this would be a red flag that a guy basically bought a car, maxed out his credit cards to dump a bunch of money into it, and isn't much of a gearhead.
I'd sooner buy a car from a guy who's taken his car to trackdays than buy from a guy who doesn't know much about the mods he put on his car.
