This thread really got me thinking about an alcohol or water or 50/50 split for my car.

Its already a stage 4 running a FP Red puting 360 to the wheels.

I did some investigation and asked around. I talked to a close personal friend of mine who is the race engineer for the AEM Drag and Drift team.

He loves the idea (and has used) a water/methanol combo but running pure alcohol is risky. A previous car he worked on (a turbocharged S2000) ran with full methanol injection. Did fine for a while but something happened causing a intake valve backfire - ignighting the flamable methanol/compressed air in the intake manifold blowing it straight through the hood of the car. I personally hadn't thought of that possiblity.

Anyone else heard of this? Makes me think H20 or Meth/H20 combo may be better.

Come on guys... anybody? Intake manifolds exploding? There must be some good stories if this actually happens!

I've read through this and also checked out several web sites on the topic; alchohol/water injection doesn't sound that much different from nitrous injection, except of course that N20 combusts. In fact, the numbers on that dyno chart below look very similar to what a friend of mine was able to achieve with a wet "50-shot" of "da nawssss" in his 03 WRX. Has anyone done a comparison of water vs. NOS? I suppose the idea of injecting water into your engine seems a bit nonsensical to most people, which is why alchohol or water injection doesn't quite have the "street cred" of N02, but after reading the web sites on the subject the idea of dumping laughing gas into my intake manifold seems crazy, when water and methanol seems to be a safer and more predictable alternative.

I know Gruppe-S started this thread to promote sales of their own kit, but do any of you have home-built kits or other alternatives/versions? This doesn't look that hard to pull off, if you already have the ECU part of it in place...

Called my local speed/high performance shop and they quoted $2.75 a-gallon for Methanol. Sure seems cheaper than $8-10 bucks a gallon for denatured alcohol. Guess which fluid I'm going tune with 50% distilled water (.58 cents at Wal-mart). Please correct me if the $2.75 a-gallon quote seems off to you.

Yeah, that's damn cheap. We charge $6 a gallon for meth and that's really close to our cost.

Thanks,

Geoff

Well,

I called my local speed shop again, and they again quoted $2.75 a gallon. Don't know, are there 2 types of Methanol used in racing and racing related products? Using Methanol as an I/C coolant is new to me.

quoted $2.75 a gallon for Methanol if your interested.

How do you think the alky does compared to H20?
They mix very well. 50/50... safe. I was running this stuff in '79 in a twin turbo Saab I had built. It's nothing new.

Hmm, that's odd. I'll double check on that. Maybe I confused the number 6 with the number 3. Haha.

Thanks,

Geoff
