Bought A Used STi - 1st Post - A Few Questions Please
Hi, 1st post...
I just bought an 04 Pearl Black STi for $26,500 otd...25,000mi on it. It was already modified and I want to know a few things about it. It has a 3" turboback exhaust (unknown brand)...from what I could see there is no cat. It also has a short ram intake...ive read a few bad things about them...what is your take? Should I find a stock box or no? It also has front and rear sways with tie bars, haven’t looked to see if they are adjustable.
Stock boost spikes to 17-18lbs and quickly settles to 16-17lbs while I rev. Is this too high? I haven’t noticed any boost creep either...I know that it can be a problem, but it doesn’t seem to occur on my STi. I know stock boost is ~ 14.5lbs so I need to know; is it is safe to have boost pressures that high? If its not what should I do? I heard that MBC's are no good so how do you control your boost?
Thanks,
Pauly

If you have a properly tuned ECU you should be ok with the short ram and TBE. Have someone drive behind you at night and see if you spit flames. If you are you probably have an aftermarket downpipe that removed the cats. You're gonna need to find a stock one before you can take your car for emmissons testing. Bring it to a local tuner and have them check it out.

if you are hitting 17-18 psi, that is boost creep, all catless turbobacks have that unless you take the turbo off and have it ported. Typically if it spikes/creeps up that high(17-18) you'll throw a CEL.

5th gear might start to grind around 15-20k
Cam belt tensioner might start getting noisy around then too
check the tranny fluid level right away, we all seem to get them delivered a quart low.

I don't have emmisson checks here in Oregon.

Ive had boost creep before in my GSX...and this is not what I would call creep. More like spiking and dropping off very quickly within a second or half second. Why cant you use a MBC to control boost? Ive havent had any cel yet either.
Truefully, I dont know what he did to it. I need to get under it and see what is going on. Can you install a bigger w.g. flapper...or is the mod available yet?
