I have an 04 STi, about 25whp higher than stock (catback and reflash). I've kept a gas fillup log since Oct 2005 and my current running average is 22.39mpg on 32891.4 miles driven and 1468.75 gallons poured. I've paid $4585.31 for gas since keeping the log - really helps put things in perspective.
My best tank was 25.18mpg which was basically entirely freeway, worst tank was 18.18mpg which was lots of cold starts, short trips, and city cycle.
Driving habits play a large role in fuel economy, so these numbers are a bit meaningless if I don't tell you how I drive. I usually do 70-75 on the freeway, sometimes 80 if I'm in a rush. Non-freeway driving I try to give moderate throttle to minimize pumping losses and usually short shift around 2500-3000 rpm. Basically I try to get to 5th or 6th as quickly as possible and stay in those gears as long as I can. I coast to a stoplight/stop sign/etc in gear whenever possible for as long as possible.

bullhonkie, thank you for such a great response. Everyone tells me that I should not buy an STI because I would not use it to it's full extent. I consider anything over 16mpg and economical car. Just caluclated my mpg again, its between 7-8mpg. Let me put it this way, I want an economical sports car that is awd. Reason I started out with the STI is because i hear the transmission is much better than that of the wrx. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's just not the tires that are better on the sti, they do have better suspension, I like the interior better, and better performance. Now don't get me wrong, I would not mine a wrx but I can't stand the 06-07 headlights and I hear that those years have a better tranny. The conditions my car sees is rain, I go to Mammoth Mountain once a month, Colorado 2 times a year, and I go to the local mountains (big bear) 2 times a week. I see snow a lot. I also see the beach too. I was looking at an FJ Cruiser but the guys on the boards there say they get anywhere from 14-18mpg.
Yes, the STi 6-spd is worlds stronger than the wrx 5-spd, plus it has the big Brembo brakes. The wrx would be a better daily driver choice but the STi is the one to choose if you want to drive it hard all the time (and bang gears), it can withstand the abuse. The wrx on the other hand, if you abuse it...something will break sooner rather than later.
