STI: Is There A Way To Get Better MPG?

Just like the titles asked. Is there?

I'm planning to buy an 04-05 within the next few months and just doing as much research now.

From the way that it looks I don't think gas prices are going to be dropping but I'm sure it will go up.

It doesn't sound like the STI is that much worse that what I already drive, in terms of MPG, I get 19.5/27

But any little bit helps I guess. Most people say as long as you don't drive in boost the gas milage is decent.

Any thoughts?

Don't build boost. Don't drive in the city.
I don't want to be rude or anything but if you're worrying about MPG's I suggest you don't buy an STi. There is no way to avoid paying for premium at the pump.
The most miles I've gotten on a full tank on my STi is about 250. 260 and I get excited.

You're kind of stuck with it. You can short shift at every oppurtunity to avoid boost but you're still going to be paying. If gas prices are an issue then don't even bother buying an STi. The maintenence when it comes time will really make you worry. I think I spent over $400 for brake pads.

Hypermiling techniques can be applied to any car, manual transmission is a special plus.

Keep the RPM below 3000, preferably below 2500, put the car in neutral when you find yourself going down a hill, go no faster than 55 except in 65 zones, shut the car off if you're going to be stopped for more than 30 seconds.

All this of course takes the fun out of owning a STI, which is partly why I have a base impreza.

I've gotten 270 and that was driving on 5 straight up from LA. I probably would've gotten better, but not a good idea since the next gas station wasn't for another 30miles. But ya... If you are that worried about gas mileage, I seriously suggest looking at another car.

Dont have a lead foot

My STi is modded, I'm always in boost and I get about 14/18 street and highway.....I dont understand how some STi owners get mileage in the 20's....they must not have any fun.

The only way to get econobox mileage is to buy an econobox.

That pretty much says it.

However, he wasn't asking how to get civic type mileage out of an STi, he was asking if there are any tips on maximizing the mileage in the STi.

A year or two ago Road and Track tested a few gas saving driving tips, but the only one I remember is that WOT short shifts actually get the best mileage compared to slow acceleration. Although, I find "brRA, brrRRAA, brrrRRRAAA" to be less fun than "brrrRRRAAAAA, BrrrRRRRRRAAAAAAAAA, BRRRRRRRAAAAAAA" know what I mean?

Highway vs City vs Fun

I have gotten 29 mpg on the way to AZ and 31 on the way back (???? still havent figured out why) in my STI with cruise control set at 80mph. Commuting to work and school I get about 20-23. Then there is the last fun run I did from Malibu up to Ojai and over to Frazier Park, i think it was near 12 or 14. Just keep it below 3,000 rpm's and keep around 70 mph on the freeway and the mpg's should be too bad.

Or get a Mazda3 2.0 autobox and you will never have fun runs but always get 30+ mpgs.

I find this very hard to believe...how do you calculate your mileage? Did you coast down hill for many miles?
