WRX Motor Swap into 2.5RS
Hey Guys,
First off, I'd like to wish everyone a Happy New Years!
Okay, I have a 1998 Impreza 2.5RS and was thinking in investing in a WRX set up soon. However, I was wondering if you guys could help me out and give me a list of all of the parts I would need for a proper WRX swap into my car. Aside from the obvious EJ20, tranny, ECU, motor mounts, it would be nice to know what exactly I needed. Also, in terms of USDM motors, can you give me the years of what WRX motors/setup are best compatible (to fit my car). If JDM WRX motors can fit, can you please list the years that will ensure me to pass CA smog emissions (I hate California for these stupid regulations lol).
I want to convert to a WRX set up so bad since the RS is so damn light. Anywho, thanks for your guy's input and hope to hear from some good feedback soon!

First piece of info. Just go buy a WRX.
Haha. Sorry. Just had to say that. It'd be cheaper to just go buy a used WRX, but if you really want to do a swap... I'd say go for it. At the moment, I know of two people who are in the process of swapping. salvator_rizzo and mulcibre.
What you need exactly? It depends. As far as I know, anything from 02-07 seems to fit just fine. You'll need a turbo crossmember, but I hear there is a way to modify the WRX to fit. As for your question about smog stuff, you can't really swap in a JDM EJ20 and expect it to be smog legal.
Best thing to do is just get a whole WRX clip and swap the whole thing in. Doing the physical swap isn't what kills people, it is the wiring that goes with it. The wiring between the NA and turbo's are a very different. It just doesn't plug and play. You either have to replace the whole thing or splice the wiring to make it work.

If you are down south, talk to Garage Tuning. If you are up in here in the bay, talk to LIC Motorsports. I am pretty positive LIC will tell you the same thing they told me, which is, it is cheaper for you to just go buy a new WRX than to swap one into your RS.

LOL I wanted to buy a bugeye but decided to go with the RS instead. Yeah, I figured that all JDM configurations would not pass smog but just thought I'd mention it to make sure. Yeah, I've actually heard that most of the headaches come from re-wiring everything. Well thanks a lot for the help man, I appreciate it. Hope you have a good New Years =D

I have heard of Garage Tuning down south doing swaps. Not sure how good they are! LIC has done many swaps, and yes they would encourage you to just get a WRX. I don't think they are doing any swap jobs anymore! But I'm sure they could inform you of what parts it you'd need to do a complete swap. g'luck.
