Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

What turbo would you use??

i would recommend a deadbolt MONSTER P&P VF22.. ive heard nothing but good things about this turbo or any turbo for the matter with a MONSTER P&P.. im going with the monster vf22 because it has the top end i desire and with this option (P&P) has similar spool-up as a vf30/34..

BTW - deadbolt's website

u should check out the turbo xs stage 4. comes with a vf 30 and gives 375 horsepower at the crank. it cost 4 grand and if you put down another grand for a front mount intercooler you would have over 400 hp easily. im savin up for this package but im scared that if im running that much power that my tranny might blow.

Jerry...aka deadbolt, is running a P&P VF22 right now and likes it...he even autocrossed with it recently

PS...I love my Monster TD04

Is IHI the only brand people use? How about APS, AVO, Garrett or PE.

Used TD04's can be had cheap in the classifieds, if not here then on NASIOC....$200 is about the going rate...I've seen 'em given away for actual shipping charges....:O
Send it to Jerry, and be happy

I gotta start savin' for the RA gearset I'm gonna need...

Save a lil bit of cash up, then go get a Garrett GT20 or GT22 with the ball bearing option. specs show a tad bit bigger than the VFs but with the modern areodynamics of Garrett turbos added with ball bearing design, you've got a pretty good setup there. On the point of welding a T-series flange, Garrett does make direct replacement drop in turbos (dont quote me just yet). Try calling Turbometrics or go to their website (link on i-club homepage) and their scroll down a bit on their price list and they list Garrett turbos at an introductory price which competes with many of IHI prices.

The Garrett GT20 is slightly bigger(45mm compressor,41.2mm turbine) than the biggest VF but the GT-series aerodynamics is very low drag/high efficency and is a nice size for 300-350 WHP with a great powerband

The Garrett GT22 is slightly larger than the GT20 but gives you the option of running with an internal or external wastegate
(sized 52mm comp, 50.3 turbine for internal and 59.41mm comp and 50.3 turbine.) This setup looks a bit better for higher power aspirations as you would have to get a new uppipe to incorporate an external WG as well as proper tuning.

Tranny is the next consideration but i'll save that for next time...
(I want an STi 6spd...still deciding...with or without DCCD)

The wastegate's job is to regulate boost pressure. since the turbo is driven by the exhaust gases, the turbo's speed can be controlled by varying the amount of exhaust gas driving the turbo.
In many (almost all) factory applications, an internal wastegate is used. this type of wastegate is integrated into the turbo and is used when packaging is a concern. The diaphragm and actuator are also built into the turbo, making the package an all in one affair. internal wastegates are known for somewhat minor problems like boost creep and spiking due to slow reaction of the actuator, but with optimized downpipe designs creating better efficiency internally wastegated turbos work just fine.

Many aftermarket turbo setups will run with an external wastegate. used when speed and not packaging is the only concern, external wastegates have to be mounted onto the exhaust manifold right before the turbo. external wastegates are faster acting than internal wastegates and can hold more of a higher boost pressure (7-40 and up depending on spring pressure, size and quality).

that should do it for now...
