wastegate on stock turbo
im just curious guys, can you put an external wastegate on the stock turbo, i have never heard of anyone doing this. what are the gains of and external wastegate over the internal actuater.

none.
no reason (performance wise) to run an external 'gate with a stock turbo. there are only two things I can think of that might give you a little extra.
1) if you have the stock downpipe or some other dp with a flat flange (like the HKS) then having an external wastegate with flow directed elsewhere will eliminate turbulence in turbine exhaust flow. of course modifiying the flange to a bell-mouth is a fraction of the cost of doing an external wastegate so why bother.
2) if you have an electronic boost controller than a larger wastegate can be held shut longer before needing to open to limit boost. in other words the turbo will spool up a fraction sooner. the difference will probably be to small to notice.

The only reason to use an external wastegate is if ..
a) The stock wastegate is no longer efficient enough to properly control the boost (i.e. boost creep or spikes)
b) You have upgraded your turbo to a model that does not have a built in wastegate and HAVE to use an external.
If the one you have is working fine (boost levels off and does not spike past where you have it set) then you don’t need an external. Use your money elsewhere that will make you more horsepower
