Using Premium Fuel in WRX's
I just bought an 03 wrx sedan about just under a week ago and the delivery specialist said that i really should use 91 octane. now where i live, thats some expensive fuel, i figured that i would use it at least until the break in period was over, but has anyone been runing there's on 87? any problems
if you try it...
you will run into serious knock problems, and throw a check engine light. You will get an error code, that deals with the emissions evaporation control unit.
I would suggest not using anything lower than 91, and would also not suggest putting in 89 with "gasoline boosters" as that would not be too wise.
Search for a gas station that has cheaper prices...
Later,
i.

The owners manuual specifically states that ONLY 91 Octane or higher should be used... You risk potential long-term damage your engine and detonation is a real ***** in a turbo charged car... Buy 91 and suck it up... And if you didn't know this going into your purchase, then I guess you will do a little more homework next time huh?
My $ .02

Car Info: 02 WRX wagon=dead; rollin' in a Craptastic Camry!
1) you bought a car with forced induction and paid around 24 grand for it. Pony up the extra 3-5 bucks to fill the tank with the gas it was designed for.
2) I haven't tried in my WRX, but with my old Saab turbo, running 87 instead of 92 not only made the car run like crap, but it was also more expensive! I got worse mileage running the 87, so much so that I was actually saving a buck or so by putting premium in the tank.
3) The manual says you can run 87 if nothing else is available. If you do, baby the car and try your best to stay off boost or you run the risk of doing engine damage.

You spent all this money for a new car...please spend the little extra to take care of your investment. On average, 93 (or 91 in some areas) octane gas is $.20 more than 87 octane. I usually fill up around 13 gallons. This translates to $2.60! For $2.60 isn't the piece of mind worth it? Especially since the manufacturer of your car is telling you that you should run at least 91? Besides, as mentioned before by someone else, you will probably get worse gas mileage. I ran 87 octane in my VW 1.8T once, and I noticed mileage and performance both suffered.

Don't be a cheap ***. In most places Premium is only $.20 more than Regular, so over a FULL tank, which I believe is 15.2 gal, that is a difference of $3.04.
It only averages out to about $170/yr if you fill up once a week. I think most of us who own a new car can afford $170 in 52 installments.
