Thinking of getting the Cobbtuning ECU
Thinking of getting the Cobbtuning ECU
Well I have a brandnew WRX.. and have been wondering what best bang for money mod I can do.
The Cobbtuning AccessECU looks good... 260hp for $395 I don't plan on going total power crazy.. I just want good power, thats not doing to shorten the life of my car.
Has anyone had experince with this? and does it perform like they say?
I have no mods right now... and plan on going with a TurboX Stealth Back later on.

I'm looking at it, too. I registered on Cobb's board and started reading up. As you may expect, the guys from Cobb have nothing but good things to say about it, however, they are also very straightforward as to the performance gains you should expect. No BS, no outrageous claims, and lots of comments like,
"we've been tuning for a long time, we know what the hell we're doing, but there could be problems that we don't know about so were trying not to hype this thing."
After going to a number of sites that just rave about their great and wonderful product and how it beats the crap out of everything else out there, and how you can expect 20-30HP at the wheels for the low low price of $$$$, it's nice to have the "walk soft/big stick" vibe I am getting from Cobb. As soon as my parts sell, I'm going to get one, and then I'll post up and let you know my own "butt-dyno" driven analysis.

As I understand it Stage 1 is for stock vehicles only and is just an ECU reflash. Apparently Cobb has figured out how to reflash the ECU in house, and that's how they can cut the cost. No licencing fees from ECUteck I guess.Stage 2 is apparently a ECU reflash and a turbo back exhaust.
I was looking a vishnu stage sub-zero but now I am seriously reconsidering. Apparently you get a reflashed ECU and a t shaped connector that goes in front of the boost controller? This is the 3/16 or whatever it's called mod. It hard to argue with a tad more HP and torqe than vishnu for half the price.
I had some initial concerns about how this might effect my warranty and the general long term heatlh of my car like greydune. As I understand it the car dealership never has any need to ever reflash the unit and rarely ever even have a need to access the unit. All you need to do is pull off any stickers not stock and you are golden. From ALOT of various reading of 3 or 4 of the major WRX communities and a few mags, I feel pretty good about the robust-ness of the drivetrain with this kind of mod. The JP and euro cars make similar HP on the same drivetrain, and it seems more if not all folks seem to think that the stock drivetrain will hold up just fine...
I'm in almost for sure... Oh and BTW I have a bone stock WRX with ~2400 miles on her...

cobb ecu
Guys,
I just bought the thing and its FREAKING awsome, 1st flies by second pulls like...same in 3rd, at time on the freeway i reach to shift into fifth to find im already there thats how much more power it produces top end. this thing is so good I dont think people who payed 750 from Vishnu overpayed.
I had a stone stock car first I put in the ECU and a K&N panel filter
fabulous boost throttle response the works, faster spool harder pull every thing it is said to be. over the weekend I added samco IC hoses (good Mod) the combination is great more power power quicker, i know Im repaeting my self here but i could be happier with the ECU.
As for a car related comparison a friend of mine has K&N Up pipe and Down pipe and I can pull on him all day long.
If you have the tires to hold do this you wont regret.

so far, anyone who's had the cobb accessecu has nothing but good things to say bout it.....i don't have a turboback, and does not really match up w/their stage 2.....i'm thinking of making a trip to slc and have it custom tune, make a mini-vacation out of it
if you just want off-the-shelf ecu reflashes....go w/cobb, so much cheaper, w/the same results, hehe

I drove over April Monday the 14th had mine done $421.07 for the stage 1 upgrade (255HP / 265 ft-lbs)- 91 octane. Its all that folks. I have a COBB cat back, GFB BOV and a K & N airfilter. I'm glad there only a 4 hour drive away.

prodrive121 and FIREX,
Do you guys know how they adjusted the boost? Specifically did they up it to ~15.5-16, or just tweak the curve to make it smoother? Also, did either of you get the "off-road" treatment? (No more CEL's for cat innefficiency, EGT voltage) Going to send mine in at the end of May, and just curious about the details. I still nee to call Cobb, but maybe you can make my inquiries a bit more precise.
Thanks

hum
So.. the only down fall to this cobb access is that you have to wait until the ecu come back to ya, and you can't drive the car while they are recoding it.. how long is the turn around time? normally.. i can't wait until i get my done..

Boost
Etchy...
In talking with the guys at cobb before pulling the trigger on this I had them run me through some what of how it works and the short answer to your question is yes.
They did both
the increased torque results from the combintation of boost with lower rpms, the boost builds sooner but still peaks at abouthh the same place however the boost peaks higher to, now at around 15-15.1 from what I understand. hope this helps.
and one last plug to it to the track last weekend instead of loosing 15 yards to vettes on the fron strait no I loose 15 feet.
and EGTs were normal for track use.
