Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

TBE install, now I have a loud chirping sound

Just got a TurboXS stealthback/Prodrive axleback. The exhaust note is nice and low, but when I get on the throttle, I hear a pronounced chirping sound, even before I get to 3K RPMS and the turbo starts really going. I can even hear it at idle, albeit not that loud.

Any ideas?

Turbo spool or wastegate flutter will both be much louder with a tbe. If you don't think its normal then you probably have an exhaust leak. I would reccomend listening to another car that has a tbe and compare the sounds.

I heard a couple sharp rapping noises before I first noticed the noise. I also thought that it wasn't pulling as hard, but I chalked it up to my imagination. Now I've also noticed a wooshing noise (like wind) when I get over 3000 RPMs.

Sounds like a visit to an exhaust shop in my future.

you might have an exhaust leak... usually is after you install an exhaust and it flutters like that.

I have the TXS tbe, and if you are describing the 'tea kettle whistle' then its normal. The huge downpipe causes turbulence resulting in the whistle.

If its a metallic screech or chirp, it may not be installed/fitting correctly. Im in the east bay if you want to hear mine.

That's exactly what it sounds like, thanks. I won't worry so much

Yeah, I love that sound. Whenever I take someone for a drive in my car, they always say "Whoa, your car sounds crazy!" Sure beats an intake/bov for a noise maker..lol

I don't get a chirp with my APS downpipe/turboback, but I definitely get a WHOOSH under the passenger-side floorboards when I gun it, right as the turbo spools up. 3" exhaust is no joke! I've ridden in a friend's car which has a vf34 upgrade running 22psi of boost, and when he hits 3500 RPM the sound is like a vacuum cleaner (his APS CAI whooshing from the front, APS downpipe whooshing from the back of the engine!).
