That is most likely the turbo's blow off valve. It's releasing built up pressure.

I noticed the same thing before I even drove my car off the lot, March 26, 2001. I brought it up to the salesperson and started up another WRX they had on the lot. It made the same noise, so I figured it was normal. My car stopped doing this some time before 10K miles. I still don't know what it was, but it is normal and hasn't caused me any problems in 34K miles and 2+ years.

People have posted this noise quite often, so I wouldn't get too worked up over it.

Its the muffler. I have a WRX muffler on my Impreza L and it does the same thing.

That's what I've thought. I also noticed that the noise was not there when the engine was cold, which indicates the noise is originating from something metal which expands and contracts with the addition and subtraction of heat.

My recommendation is enjoying your car by doing several hundred pulls nearing red line. Your stock exhaust will get a little louder and your chirping will go away. At least that what mine did.

jessdog,
It's probably the blow off valve, like the most are saying here. Just go find someone with the intake silencer removed and see if it's the same noise youre talking about.
Either bov or muffler, sounds like you got nothing to worry about.
Enjoy your ride.
