Suggestions for upgrade turbo?
Hey guys. i just started buying parts for my wrx and i don't know much about what turbo to upgrade to.
So far i was thinkin of the IHI VF22 over the VF30. or maybe even getting the greddy turbo kit TZ518. Or one of the smaller garretts.
But i need some suggestions.
Im lookin for a turbo that has the ability to make 300-350whp with the correct mods. but for the moment the turbo would have be able to work with stock setup except for a 3" turbo back piping. Im also hoping to find a turbo that spools between 3300-3800 rpm. I don't want major turbo lag from a turbo like t3/t4. This is going to be more of a daily street car. Im not aiming to be a drag car.
So far i was thinkin of the VF22 over the VF30 because the VF22 can boost to 25psi where as i heard the vf30 can only do 20 psi max. And i heard that the VF turbos spool around 3300 rpm. I really don't know much about the greddy turbo kit. I read somewhere that the turbo in the kit was only a bit larger than the vf23.... but im sure its an 18g turbo and suppose to be a good deal bigger than any IHI out on the market.
As you can probably see.. im kinda confused or lost...
Any suggestions would be helpful. Im basically looking for a turbo that will have max boost fairly early in the rpm band. And also be able to eventually put out a good amount of hp since i will be working on the car little by little. Also has to be a direct bolt on. i don't think i want to get a new turbo manifold yet..... don't got that much money to spend.
Well thanks for taking the time to read and respond to this.

Why does a max psi rating have any bearing on your choice?
What you want to do has nothing to do with what [Insert turbo here] can put out in terms of psi.
What you need to do is research all of the IHI turbos out there that are direct bolt-on for the Subaru WRX. These include the VF22, 23, 24, 28, 29, 30, 34, 35. Each have their strong points and weaknesses for a given application.

Keep in mind that if you want optimum performance from whatever turbo you choose, you'll also need to get a tuned chip or some sort of engine management system. An upgraded fuel pump and fuel injectors will also be beneficial. I've witnessed a few WRX's with just the turbo swapped and I wasn't impressed. Need to have the whole package to really enjoy it.

This definately gives me more to think about.... but i still don't know that much about turbos and i don't know where to go with this. Any more suggestions or help with this?

for the power you're aiming at, a vf30 should be sufficient but it would greatly depend on the tuning (aggressive vice conservative).
upgraded fuel injectors, fuel pump, and engine management are definetely items you should look into.
