Intercooler sizing is a tradeoff between internal restriction, intended engine operating range, cost, and maybe some others that elude me right now. You might think that installing the biggest, baddest IC core that you can fit will maximize power but the greater the internal volume of the IC and its hose connections, the longer the time required to compress that volume of air when the turbo begins to make boost. Big front mount intercoolers can and do work well on the WRX but for greatest potential most owners have also upgraded to big turbos, too. When I say 'big', I'm referring to something bigger than the commonly swapped VF30, VF34, and VF22 IHI series bolt-on turbos.
Intercoolers can be constructed with internal fins that can provide additional cooling to the compressed air. You may also see similar construction in some high quality racing oil coolers. An IC can be designed with emphasis on low-speed torque with a stock turbo, or large capacity, low restriction for a high-RPM screamer.
When doing research on these aftermarket pieces, ask the manufacturer if the IC swap alone will make more power with no loss in driveability. The STi IC swap is probably a good one for the stock turbo since it is only slightly larger than the WRX unit.
Another popular mod is a set of Samco or Perrin IC hoses to reduce the restrictive factory pre-formed hoses with the tight bends and internal convoluted walls.
