stage 2 and intake
stage 2 and intake
Does anyone have a stage two with anything other than a stock intake? I checked with cobb and they recomend the stocker. I have a UNI filter ram pod and i don't know what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thet said that it may lean out the engine too much. Also if you recomend using the stock intake give me some ideas about filters, delete elbows and such.
Edit: Cobb said that aftermarket intakes tend to lean out the motor. Along wiht the leaning that thier stage two does in some spot this could hurt the motor.

I have the same intake (I bought it before learning about this site) but I took it out after all of the negative feedback (on all intakes) I got from a thread I posted here. I didnt want to risk haveing any problems because of it so I reinstalled the factory box and did the silencer removal @ http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/sho...?threadid=3268 I didnt add this piece because I didnt know about it but it looks like a good idea. I do miss the sound of the intake and I would think the leaning problem could be fixed by some custom tuneing (which would probable stop you from doing the reflash or acces port). So I will leave it out because I plan on doing Acces port. Cobb told me the same thing.

I am going to remove my intake a put the stock box back on. I am goig to buyt that delete elbow though. Just safer that way. I wish the stock intake box looked a little cooler though. I may paint it or something. Luckily i bought my rampod used so i'm not out alot. I may try to sell it(with a disclaimer of course). I was very happy with it and it caused me no trouble until now.

There's a 'sticky' thread listed on this forum page about intakes.

These intakes can be custom-tuned to smooth things back to normal but it can take up to an hour of dyno tuning, with little or no gain in power.

Pay for a couple of AWD dyno runs at nearly any shop with a wideband 0² sensor. If you have the time, try to do back-to-back runs on the same car using your Unifilter and the stock airbox. That's the only way you'll know for sure that there's a difference.
It's also possible that a given intake will not lean out an engine enough to cause any damage. All that's known for certain is that the stock airbox won't cause problems. There's also a misconception that a slightly leaner mixture is better for power, but while this may be true under certain conditions, MAF errors make a torque curve much more jagged with lots of peaks and valleys. Intakes are not a good way to tune cars.

If you are not going to have your car tuned, then I suggest that you maintain your stock airbox. With tuning you can compensate and adjust to the aftermarket intake, but on a basic "off the shelf" map, it probably isnt designed for it.
On my personal car, I've got a stg 2 unichip that I got tuned to get 247whp.
MY MODS:
HKS dp
HKS upp
HKS catback
HKS bov
Greddy intake
Port and Polished throttle body
Port and Polished IC inlet pipes
ION stg 0 turbo (reworked TD04)
UNICHIP

My car is running a safe 340 crank hp on the stock airbox and filter (I did hack the silencer).
As you will read in many threads, most major tuners do not recommend intakes for the reasons you described. In addition, unless they have a CARB sticker on them, aftermarket intakes are illegal here in Kalifornia (land of smog *****).

I heard the only a few intakes will work okay for the wrx. I have the greddy going to change to perrin or txs intake. In the cobb tuning they said they can give you a reflash for your intake too. Just look at frequently asked questions. Well people with fmic will need to replace there intake becuase the stocker won't fit. If you don't have much mods just change it back to the stock and get the stage 2.
