Rebuild or Replace Rear Differential?
I needsa new diff. It grumbles, loudly, when I let off the throttle.
04 WRX, 5 speed, 140K on the odomter, car is a daily, some action here and there (absolutely no redline launches from a stop etc. though), don't expect to break 350 wheel horse after all planned mods and tune.
I am the 4th owner, and previously have had to deal with snake in grass problems from the previous drivers. Looks like another scaly is saying hi now.
Should I rebuild or replace?
Recomendations on where and/or how to go about doing that?

I just had to rebuild the rear diff on my 03. Spider gears took a crap, so I decided to throw a limited slip in it. I went with the Cusco 1.5 RS. Car drives great now, but slow tight corners it is loud as hell. It doesn't bother me too much, but she hates it. I tough about buying a used one, but you never know what condition it is going to be in. I'm in Santa Clara if you want to see what it sounds like.
Is the noise from some kind of dog gear setup in the dif? I find I don't know much about some parts of the car until I want to upgrade it or it goes wrong haha.
I'm down for a cheap/workable solution for now, hence the used/rebuild question.

Cost mainly.... You can find a wrx diff for fairly cheap... <200 dollars.... Unless you can rebuild it yourself and not pay mechanics rate.
You can find a few diff's for sale here or on nasioc. For reference I sold an r180 sti diff for 300 and that's about the price they go for. A wrx diff is much cheaper

Good to know though. I had some issues previously with diff clunk (independent of any wear issues so far as I knew), which poly bushings and heavier fluid helped a lot with.
