rattling/grinding sound and 'stutter' in 1st gear (was: Two Issues...)

I just bought my 05 WRX and I've had a noise I'm unsure about... The sound is pretty apparent and only happens when the car is slowing down in gear (under compression) and mostly in third gear. I hear a rattling/grinding coming from the transmission area. It could be a heat shield or something worse... Anyone have similar issues?

The other problem is when I punch the throttle in firs gear I get almost a studder as it runs from low to high rpm's. I don't know what turbo lag feels like but it very well could be it. Anything?

Also could anyone recommend a nice cat-back exhaust and blow off valve for an 05 WRX? I just want a little sound out of this thing!

Thanks yall!

did you buy it in private sale or from a dealership? if you got it from the dealership I'd bring it back to them and ask them to look at it.

as far as a CBE, it really depends when youre looking for. If you want something thats a little louder and a lot deeper at idle, but has the ability to scream at WOT, go with the borla hush. If you want a BOV sound, go rent Need For Speed Carbon.

congrats on the new car though, and welcome to i-club

I bought it from a dealership and they did look at it and the report said that they moved some heat shields... Then I drove it and couldn't make the noise again. Of course after a few miles the sound was back! I love the car... So much fun to drive but this sound is killing me!

go back and kindly ask them to move more heat shields you can also ask them to go on a test drive with you so that you can try to make it make the sound

....or being devil's advocate

it can be something worse. If you bought it from a dealer i would def. do what these people suggested - take it back. if you having chatter at low rpms worse case could be a LOOSE FLYWHEEL. i've seen it happen, as a matter a fact experienced it. what you describing sounds like it. BUT AGAIN that is WORSE CASE. you might want to get that checked

Good Luck

could be wastegate flutter if it does it while decelerating. have the dealer adjust the wastegate

i have an 05 wrx and i get the wierd deceleration whine/grind also, mostly in 1st and 2nd gear and a small bit in 3rd. Ive read a couple forums that this is normal, but i have a feeling thats BS. Im to the point where i avoid decelerating in 2nd. I am first going to change the tranny and diff fluid and if that doesnt help then ill probablly get it checked out. Il let you know wat i find out
