New WRX, advice wanted
Hello everyone. I am purchasing a WRX from Exeter Subaru in NH and would like some advice. I have been considering adding an uppipe and downpipe to the car, Exeter sells ones from BPM and someone else (don't remember who) and will install them on the car at the time of purchase. ( www.subaruwrxparts.com )
I have heard some stories of the uppipes not being very reliable (leaking and burning up EGT sensors and whatnot). I am wondering if anyone can give their opinion how much trouble will come as a result of these mods. I also don't really want to deal with the check engine light, but is that possible without getting a new ecu and whatnot? Scoobysport seems to have a cool ECU but I imagine it won't work with US cars, right?

no REAL trouble
IF installed correctly the first time.
I would trust Exeter to do it right. Those guys rock.
However, get ready for the CEL you are going to have.
Ii would get the CEL fix diodes and have them toss them on at the same time.
OH and buy a whiteline rear sway bar while you are at it. HUGE difference in handling.

Congratulations on buying the best practical performance car money can buy! Welcome to the club, hope you enjoy the amazing WRX and the joys (thrills!?) of modifying it.
Just an uppipe shouldn't throw a CEL since the cat in it is just a precat - the other two cats do most of the work. It certainly isn't common, but appearently has happened, so I guess you should be prepared to buy the $20 CEL fix from Pony Express Performance just in case.
About the uppipes being reliable, as davenow said it's no problem if installed correctly, and Exeter is more than capable. Actually the uppipe will increase reliability over the long term or if you run more than stock boost eventually. By moving the cat out of there, there is no chance that it will melt and cause an exhaust gas backup or possibly break up and fly up into the turbo's exhaust housing (thus destroying it).
If you go with an aftermarket downpipe or full turboback exhaust with no cats or even one aftermarket hi-flow cat and no precat in the uppipe you WILL throw a 420 catalytic converter inefficiency code CEL. No big deal, just get the CEL fix - I've been running it since the day I first messed with the exhaust and have NEVER had a CEL from my baby. Perhaps the best single $20 I've spent on the exhaust.
P.S. BPM uppipes are overpriced. Get the Godspeed or Turbo XS ones for only $200 - both fit better and are better quality than the BPM for less money. I guess I'd reccomend the Turbo XS because it has a tuning bung in addition to the factory EGT bung already on it and is made of cast iron which will expand and contract the same as the turbo housing and manifold it hooks up to. Cast iron will also hold heat better allowing higher exhaust gas velocities and therefore a quicker spool. Just my .02c
