Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Looking to upgrade turbo on JDM Ver. 7 STi

So Ive finally swapped my Ver. 7 STi engine and 6 speed into my RS, and now am itching to start the upgrade spree again. Right now, power mods are minimal, just a JDM Trust DD catback. A helix JDM fitment downpipe is on the way, Im keeping the stock intake and throwing a K&N in, staying with the stock top mount for now, fuel rails and injectors will soon follow since I want to upgrade the turbo. The VF30 on it is nice, but runs out of breath, and since it redlines at 8K, I need a turbo that will be able to hold the boost. I was thinking about an FP Green since I have talked to one or two others who have this same setup, IE Ver. 7, and loved the Green. Im planning to run an alki injection kit as well, so that should help regain some of the performance. Any input is welcome...turbos are something I dont know too much about...I just know that the Green is a low boost happy turbo, or so Ive been told.

Patrick
PS - The car is tuned for crappy CA 91, and I would like to keep it that way...pump gas is expensive enough as is.

i think the aps sr55 is a good street turbo. What kind of driving are you wanting to do? street sr55 track gt30r not the 35r. I think good driving and on 91oct the sr55 can do 11sec on that set up.

Hmm, now that you mention it, I havent really thought about the APS turbos. I agree, the 35R would be too big. How do the Green and the SR55 compare? I think I havent considered the APS turbos cuz I dont really know much about them or how they stack up compared to say the IHI's, which are really the only turbos I think I know. Ive thought about the PE's as well, but again, dont know much about them. Thanks for the suggestions.

I've heard some negative things about APS turbos. How about you get an APEXi RX6 turbo kit with external WG. Keep it Japanese.

Yeah but how streetable would that be? I know even less about the HKS, Apex, Blitz, and GReddy kits than I do the others Ive mentioned...that would be badass though....Id love to have a rotated turbo setup cuz thats just baller status...but this does have to be my daily driver, at least for now.

A friend uses an 18G on his WRX and does well at track days. It's a bolt-on replacement for the IHI series. He also uses a big Perrin front-mount and has the engine tuned for 'better' than 91 octane. On pump gas, the engine did not have as much mid-range torque.

The VF30 and VF34 are good street performance turbos on CA 91 octane pump gas and will work to a degree with a race gas map. The VF22 moves the torque band slightly higher with a correspondingly higher peak hp figure, but trades off some torque down low compared to stock and the VF30 and VF34.

The problem with even the JDM engine is that with just 2.0 liters of displacement, you aren't going to have stump-pulling torque of a 427 Chevy engine. To get power, you have to rev the **** out of 2 liters, and this means having the forged bottom end and valvetrain to handle the higher rev limits.
