Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

so you think either stock or sti TMIC with the VF34 and supporting mods? What do you think about the TXS TMIC?

I am doing some reading up on W.I. and it sounds really nice.

Definitely an STi top mount over the stock one. I'm not that impressed by super-thick core topmounts. They suffer from the same issues as front mounts, without the advantage of not heat soaking.

Intercoolers

I installed a Hyperflow TMIC, along with an STI scoop. It did not do a whole bunch of good until I removed the splitter & grommet completely. Now it draws in more cold air when I'm moving, and vents hot air when I'm sitting. I do intend to install a water spray injector system when I get around to picking up all the reqd.
parts, and find a space to sandwich another reservoir under the hood.
My 02 w/ 4EAT tranny is difficult to access the front differential & tranny dip stick fill tubes, with that wide TMIC sitting up there.

I've seen cars dyno up to 15whp more with a FMIC / larger tmic than the jdm sti... Think it through carefully.

semi-on-topic, who makes an out-of-the-box water spray kit for an 02 WRX (stock intercooler)? I've seen some of the homebrew systems cooked up on scoobymods and various sites, and I'd rather just have a boxed solution. How about one that comes on automatically?

Hmmm

I dynoed at Vishnu and put down 244 with a Greddy FMIC. Dan Avon dynoed the EXACT same setup as myself except with a Blitz FMIC and put down 274. Interesting...

So how does his different FMIC setup than your FMIC setup prove that the Blitz makes more power than a good top mount? Plus, you both had engine management, which is where extra power really comes from. Intercoolers by themselves, regardless of type, don't make power.

Considering that an intercooler is designed to work at driving speeds (the SPD tuning site claims you need to be moving at least 15 mph for the intercooler to be sufficiently cooled), it seems unlikely that the advantage of the intercooler would show up on the dyno at all, even with fans -- not enough air moving to cool that core. Quarter-mile times would be the only test that would be certain, and even then conditions are so variable it would be tough to pinpoint the intercooler as the source of the shortened time.

If that is true, then the dyno testing in the old SCC mag review holds no water.

Dave Coleman of SCC did a crapload of thermal data logging comparing a stock WRX intercooler (non-STi) to the large APS topmount. It included comprehensive dyno and real-world testing. Frankly, since I don't drag race, I'll take the stock IC. The STi top mounts improve upon the stocker by increasing max air flow without adding significant mass to heat soak. That's why I recommend an STi topmount to pretty much everyone whose motorsports focus is something other than drag racing.
