Which intercooler??
Which intercooler??
I am about to be doing some major upgrades to my Rex
currently im getting a Vf 34 turbo, injectors, and the fuel pump.
Helix turbo back echaust and up pipe
Cobb AP
but i cant decide on the intercooler, cost is an issue id like for it to cost less than 1000, install will be taken care of, I just cant decide what to get, I was thinkin of a Greddy FMIC, Turbo XS top mount, or an APS top mount. Will I see any major pwer differences between any of these? and the greddy FM requires the Air inix Kit, will that throw the CEL? and does cobb custom make you maps because i noticed they dont have anything with new intake and new intercooler. I would like the best HP numnbers, also how does the greddy look ondce installed? thanks to every1 that replies.

So I assume you want the highest peak horsepower possible right? If so, the Greddy FMIC is the way to go. You'll probably have to sacrifice a little bit of daily drivability though, as I'm sure you already know
Also, you don't HAVE to use the Greddy Airinx. Any short ram intake will be fine. I recommend the HKS Racing Suction and the Blitz LM short ram intakes. I'm quite sure that a short ram intake, when mated to a FMIC, won't throw a CEL unless something is truly wrong. But don't quote me on that

thanks man, it is looking to me like the greddy wil actually be cheaper... LOL since i wont have to buy new scoop or air splitter. an does any one know how much more hp a front mount will give me over a top mount? thanks and still lookin for some pics of the greddy fmic installed
WAIT! Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY THE GREDDY FMIC! I had it and it sucks! THe piping is small, power gains are horrible! If you're going to go with a front mount, I suggest only the Blitz or new Turbo XS. Top mount - APS by far!

Greddy FMIC is garbage. The piping is small. Get a Blitz or something instead. Heat soak is really a non issue once the car gets moving anyways. A quality TMIC or FMIC would be fine for your VF34. Alot of people are even still using the stock TMIC with VF34's and still running fine.

You said it, JDM top mount. The US STi top mount is only slightly smaller and fits better though. That's what's going on the engine I'm building for my RS, with an STi shortblock and VF22.
cool man you have been a great deal of help, and that will save me a lot of cash i saw that the TXS front mount is on sale for 999 how much more HP would i see from that compared to an sti top mount, i wanna see if it would be worth the extra 600 bux. and if i get the sti top mount should i get
new sti hood scoop? new air splitter?

Yes on the hood scoop and air splitter, they do help. With moderate sized turbos, like any of the IHI series, there are no power gains to be had by a FMIC since the top mounts can handle the flow easily. The only difference is that the top mount will heat soak while you are sitting still, like in a staging lane, so front mounts are better for drag racing. But as soon as you get moving again, an OEM type top mount will lose that heat soak VERY quickly, while a larger core will take much much longer to get rid of the extra heat. Also, water spray on your top mount will make getting rid of any heat soak happen in seconds if you have a fine enough mist. In short, no, a front mount isn't worth the extra money, unless you really care about drag strip times or run a huge turbo.
