Injector noise? CLICK TAP CLICK?
Anybody get an off beat noise from motor when first fired up from cold?
CLICK........CLICKCLICKCLICK....CLICKCLICK..CLICK. ..CLICK
Only for about 45-60 seconds....then it subsides.
Doesn't have the "clack" or "tap" of a mechanical noise.
????
thanks
Jim

This is the noise from the solid lifters; it comes from the valve train, not the injectors. Totally normal; when they get bathed with enough warm oil (a few minutes after start) they go quiet.

I would imagine that the followers or buckets ride in a pressure-fed, machined relief in the head. It is scary to think that oil pressure isn't reaching these for 45-60-90 seconds!! ????
From looking at diagrams of the valvetrain on this motor, it looks like the cam lobes contact the followers (or adj shims) directly.....without lubrication, what is this doing to cam lobe wear at cold start up?
I will have to look at my oiling flow chart for this motor.

The oil is there, it is just cold, and thus it doesn't flow as well as it does warm. I first noticed this sound on my 02 WRX when I switched to synthetic oil of a slightly lighter viscosity than the dino oil before it; for some reason, the lighter oil made a difference.
