My check engine light just came on and I'm wondering if it's automatically triggered after 30K miles? My odometer just passed 31,500 miles and I haven't had my 30k service yet.

I checked under the hood and the only thing I noticed was low coolant level. Refilled but the CEL is still on.

Anyone else have this happen to them?

My only mod is a Prodrive Stage 2 since 10K. First time I've had a CEL. I'm gonna schedule a service for next week.

 

reset teh ecu and then drive around, or have the code pulled at auto zone or by soem one local with an OBDII scanner

 

well, i woke up this morning to drive to work and the CEL was gone. no idea why. is the code stored in memory or something so i can refer to it later?

 

Yes the code will remain in memory even after the light goes out, as long as you do not do a reset (either with a scanner or by pulling the battery). The light goes out if the problem is not detected again on successive driving cycles.
The CEL will not come on as a service indicator, it only lights when a trouble code has been stored.
Since you are in CA having a free scan at Autozone isn't an option since they no longer do it there. Your next best option is to post in your local forum, both here and on NASIOC, to see if someone near you has a scanner and can check it for you.

 

any special type of scanner? or is just called an OBDII? will a subaru dealer do it for free?

Any OBDII scanner should work, although some cheap ones might not.
Unless your car is still under warranty a dealer will want to charge you at least an hour's labor for a diagnosis.

 

yeah, my car is only 1 yr old and <32K miles, so warranty should cover it... i'll call up the dealer today and see.

 

damn - my CEL just came back on... gotta go get it checked out. is there a reference with all the problem codes and descriptions somewhere?
