Paul - thanks for the reply!

Is there anything else to replace besides the small tensioner/pulley/bearing?

What I did was, remove the shrapnel (metal shavings and lingering pieces), remove the hollowed-out tensioner = looks like an open socket at this point, then removed the bolt.

I then just applied pressure to the belt (with my hand) just enough to start threading the new tensioner in place; however, it seemed like the bolt was too long when installing with the new tensioner (bolt would not tighten any further and the tensioner would move side-to-side a bit ~1/8-1/4 inch of space between block and tensioner pin) so I used a couple of washers to take up the space.

A question i have is this, Is there a piece that I may be missing, which may have been destroyed when the original tensioner fell apart?

Is there a picture or diagram of the actual part(s) that go to this one location?

This is really driving me

The new & updated roller requires a new bolt; contact your local dealer.

I just called and was told the the bolt is the 808208320 bolt - $2.85?

Is this the correct bolt part number?

Btw: what's the benefit of using a new bolt versus using the old bolt?

unstble, i have a similar noise coming from the d-side too. im pretty sure its something to do with the power steering when i cold start, i hear it when i turn the steering wheel, and sometimes at a stop light. when i gas it goes away... i tore everything apart and it all looks good... so im stumped... i tried the broom thing too... i ended up slapping myself with the broom.. bAH.

The noise I have is always audible (not just when turning) and yes, I do hear it at the stop lights, when the car is idle, and the rumble of the exhaust does not interfere with hearing the strange noise.

When you say you "i tore everything apart" does that mean that you removed all the plastic pieces covering the timing belt, which would include having to remove the crank pulley?

I have heard of someone else having a similar noise, and it ended up being an internal engine issue......$$$ But, if you are hearing this when turning, perhaps it could be a split CV boot and your shafts are drying and rubbing causing metal-to-metal contact? This would definitely cause a strange noise to occur!

On another note.........I just went to another Subaru dealer, and found out that the first dealership sold me the wrong item! This part number doesn't even belong on MY05. Now I have to go back and exchange the part.....at the least the dealership was cool about doing a straight exchange.

I had that happen at a little after 60,000 on my '04 WRX and installed new accessory belts and don't hear it anymore. It sounds like your power steering belt is just slipping. How many miles are on your car?

To find out if it's a belt, simply remove the two accessory belts, start the car and see if the noise is still there....if not, then it's a belt issue.

Belts are ~$15 at Kragen and take about 20 minutes to replace.

I also recently started having a weird "clanking" noise. Although it does not sound as severe as most of yours. Its very faint and can kinda only be heard at idle but at a very very low volume. I cannot really pinpoint to where it is coming from but its definitely there. If need to take a guess, its somewhere around the IC area or the intake manifold area in general. I don't know what it is exactly, but I've kept up to date with all service work. I got all fluids, spark plug, and even the timing belt done. I have not changed the a/c belt or the alternator belt as of yet. Like I said it is very very faint at idle. Even when the hood is open I can barely hear it, but it is there.

Has anyone else had an issue with their AC Compressor dying so soon - 50k

miles?

try oiling the belts and the clutch on the ac compressor ,
mine was doing the same thing, chirping, and rattling noise,
ended up just needing oil,,
never had another prob!

all yall with these minor noise prob's ...
they shouldnt be anything to worry about , be be cautious
this happend to me again when i did my TMIC swap, the IC was just barely moving and rattliing against the ac line against the fire wall ( use pipe insulation to protect to solve the prob )

Actually, these noises should worry you, as my engine noise turned out to be a defective tensioner pulley and was just barely in place due to the plastic timing belt cover holding it on the bolt. This issue also caused the timing belt to get chewed up from all the shrapnel from the tensioner pulley parts that fell apart.

So, please, do be concerned when hearing any noises coming from the car that are not normal.

unstble, were you able to fix the problem with the new belt/tensioner? I'm at 50k and wondering if I should be replacing my T belt and tensioner as well. SoA online maintenence says 105,000 is the recommended replacement interval.

Paul, is this for certain years or motors (2.0L, 2.5L, FI, NA) that you've seen this on or is it pretty much across the board for most recent subaru models.
