hollow engine noise at around 3K RPM

Just don't let the revs fall below 3K and you'll be a lot happier!LOL I haven't noticed this in my car...Maybe you can talk a local member into giving you a ride in their car to see if it makes the same noise?

I know exactly what you're talking about, it takes place on mine when cruising steadily between 2700-3000 RPM. I wouldn't describe it as hollow, though, more just "mean." This is a characteristic of the boxer engine, and I think it's pretty damn cool. It's not that different from the normal sound at other RPMs, but I did find it noticeable when I first bought my car.

Doubt it, I don't have a turbo.
I remember reading an explanation for it either here or on www.nasioc.com , but I don't remember the rationale. www.howstuffworks.com has some good info on the workings of the boxer engine, but I don't think that had anything related to this particular issue.
