hollow engine noise at around 3K RPM

hollow engine noise at around 3K RPM

I noticed that the engine sound on my WRX'03 changes at around 2750 RPM, it becomes more "hollow". It goes away if I go above 3K or below 2.7K.

Should I be concerned or is it normal?

Just don't let the revs fall below 3K and you'll be a lot happier!LOL I haven't noticed this in my car...Maybe you can talk a local member into giving you a ride in their car to see if it makes the same noise?
I wouldn't worry about it unless it's accompanied by a loss of power...

I know exactly what you're talking about, it takes place on mine when cruising steadily between 2700-3000 RPM. I wouldn't describe it as hollow, though, more just "mean." This is a characteristic of the boxer engine, and I think it's pretty damn cool. It's not that different from the normal sound at other RPMs, but I did find it noticeable when I first bought my car.

I wonder why it is different just there... I actually find this noise rather annoying because I don't understand what's going on.

Can it have something to do with the turbo? It kicks in at the same RPMs, right?

Doubt it, I don't have a turbo.

I remember reading an explanation for it either here or on www.nasioc.com , but I don't remember the rationale. www.howstuffworks.com has some good info on the workings of the boxer engine, but I don't think that had anything related to this particular issue.
