Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Hey

cool idea popped into my head. Why not get a true divorced downpipe, and route the wastegate gas out the side near the front right wheel? I've never seen it done on a subie before!
Dump that gas on the feet of unsuspecting pedestrians

I don't think the seal between the turbine outlet and wastegate would allow this. Even though most divorced downpipe feature a little "tab" that fits into the turbine outlet area it would have to be a tight seal to prevent the regular exhaust flow from coming through the wastegate outlet pipe.

I believe you can only do that with a Turbo that is configured for an external wastegate.

Yeah, an external wastegate is probably a lot easier. But it would be cool.

This has been done. Gino at GB Motorsports did it, and it's awesome... super quiet exhaust, until full boost is hit, then the wastegate opens and BAM! Super loud straight pipe!

Did he do it with the downpipe dividing the flow or was the turbine housing modified? I was thinking of getting a cheap flat flange downpipe (like the HKS) and having another hole drilled in it an a dump tube welded on. I would then have a divider welded into the turbine housing to keep the flows seperated. One of my previous MR2s had an external wastegate dumping to atmosphere and it sounded wicked.

I'm not sure, but if you go to www.mpjforums.com and ask there, you will find out.
