That is a turbo heatshield, not a downpipe shield. It will keep turbo heat from rising to the intercooler, but it won't block heat from the DP specifically.

From what I've read, the best bet is to get your DP Jet-Hot coated or wrap it with insulating wrap (usually called turbo or engine wrap). Both of these are fairly cheap solutions, though for the Jet-Hot coating, you will most likely have to ship the DP somewhere, which means your car will be out of action for a few days.

Here's information on heat insulation coatings:

http://www.jet-hot.com/

When I swap out my uppipe and DP, I am going with coated and insulated pipes; anything to keep the under-hood temps down is a good thing, even if you don't plan to do track runs. As it is right now, my engine stays at operating temp THREE HOURS after my 22-minute drive to work, and makes "ticking sounds" for a full half hour after I pull in.

Just a word of warning on coating and wrapping, it is my understanding that this could lead to cracked pipes. Both methods do an excellent job of trapping heat and they might do too good of a job. This excess trapped heat could lead to cracks. Just my 2 cents.

i have heard that too... i got my old heat sheid to fit around the helix dp with some cutting and bending.... i am also taking a dp heat shield from over the cat and am going to custom weld it on my helix so it looks like a cat, maybe i will post some pictures, but it should look pretty cool, and relatively stock lol

The Jet-Hot coated pieces are rated to 1,300 degrees, and are used in miltary applications. The only way I could see heating causing a problem is if you have *uneven* heating (something that causes a hot spot or cool spot, like an exposed uncoated area) accross the pipe. That's why cast-iron pipes are popular, because they heat very evenly. Ever use a cast iron frying pan?

Check the site. They coat inside and out.

yes, please post some pictures, i tried fitting it over when i installed mine, but when i tried to rebolt the two halves back together, there was a larger gap than i expected.

What would one expect to pay to have a downpipe coated? Is coating efficient enough to leave off the heat shield? Any good places to have it done?
