Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Cold start noise/timing belt tensioner. Help me please.

you say that the pistons are shorter to conserve weight, are you talking about the skirt being shorter? that sounds kinda scary.

I thought that the noise was just the lack of hydralic slack adjusters in the valve train?

edit: put words in order

Question

I have a noise also with a cold start. But to me it sounds more like a engine mounts(???). It goes way after the car warms up. It just started a bout 2 weeks ago.

My '02 WRX makes the exact same noise when it's cold and warm. My dealer and tuner told me not to worry about it, but it's hard not to. It bothers the $hit out of me & I wish I knew what it was.

I'm not sure if we're all hearing the same sound but I hear some ticking at idle usually when the car is cold. It just sounds like valve clatter just like I heard on my VR6 (although that's hydrolic lifters). I switched to Mobil1 0w-40 and the ticking is almost completely gone. Its there if you go under the hood and listen for it, but you can't really hear it otherwise. Makes the car sound smoother at idle. And even when the car is completely cold, there is not ticking and it sounds much smoother and healthier.
It may not fix all your problems but its worth a shot at your next oil change

Thanks

Well ladies and gentlemen, I hate to report, but I am having a similar problem. I have a 2003, unmodified WRX w/ 13000 miles. Recently, the weather started to turn for the worst here in Buffalo, and in the colder evenings and early mornings, I started to hear a "ticking" type sound like those several of you are describing. It is more intense under light load and throttle.

I brought the vehicle into the dealer, and a service tech and I took it out, however the engine had warmed up considerably by then (mid afternoon), so it was difficult to reproduce the sound. The tech did hear it slightly however, and he provided two possible reasons (probably not a supprise to any of you)

piston slap
belt tension mechanism

In both cases, he said that there was nothing to worry about, but he did document it for me, mainly for warnety concerns. Problem is, I just cannot ignore the sound! Once you tune into it, you cannot not hear it

Anyway, hope this further supports any conclusions you all might have come to.
