can this setup beat an M3?
my friend just recently bought a 2004 M3 and he's rubbin it in my face. he's calling me out to the tracks to race. my wrx is stock right now but within the next two months i will be running this setup.
Helix turboback w/ uppipe
Accessport
Vf34 w/ Sti injectors and fuel pump
do you guys think this setup is enough to beat an M3? Or do i need a bigger turbo like a PE1820 or something.

I bet if you put $30k in a wrx it would kill an M3 but it kinda defeats the point.

You would not have to put in $30k to make a WRX out perform a M3 more like 10k to 15k i think is more appropiate.
To help you out a bit, in the Sept. 03 Sport Compact Car pitted an EVO against an S4, M3 and a Porsche 911 CS4. They also threw in a modified EVO (Vishnu's stage 0). To make a long story short the stock EVO did quite well against the other 3 and the Vishnu Stage 0 took every category.
S4:
1/4 mile: 13.8 @100.6
0-60: 5.6
60-0: 118 ft
lateral: .88g
700ft. Slalom: 68.0 mph
Lap time:1.39.98
M3:
1/4 mile: 13.6 @104mph
0-60: 5.4
60-0: 111 ft
lateral: .91g
700ft. Slalom: 69.0 mph
Lap time:1.38.08
C4S:
1/4 mile: 13.6 @103.4
0-60: 5.5
60-0: 112 ft
lateral: .94g
700ft. Slalom: 69.2 mph
Lap time:1.36.29
Stock EVO:
1/4 mile: 14.0 @97.7
0-60: 5.8
60-0: 113 ft
lateral: .93g
700ft. Slalom: 72.3 mph
Lap time:1.37.41
Vishnu Stage 0 EVO
1/4 mile: 13.1 @105.6
0-60: 4.7
60-0: 111 ft
lateral: .96g
700ft. Slalom: 72.1 mph
Lap time:1.35.79
So the question is, how do we get Vishnu stage 0 EVO performance out of a stock WRX.
The answer lies in the August edition of SSC, where a Vishnu stage 2 WRX ran nearly identical times. Both tests were run on the Willow Springs course, however the WRX test ran on a cooler day, so you do have to take that in consideration.
Vishnu stage WRX:
1/4 mile: 12.8 @110.4
0-60: 4.7
60-0: 110 ft
lateral: .97g
700ft. Slalom: 71.9 mph
Lap time:1.35.48
The Vishnu Stage 2 car consisted of:
VF30, STi injectors, Walbro Fuel pump, Remapped ECU, Turbo-back Exhaust, up-pipe,JIC Coilovers, 22mm anti-roll bar, Stoptech front brakes & rotors w/ Pagid pads, stock rear brakes w/ Pagid pads, steel brake lines, 17" Rota Tarmacs on Toyo Proxes RA1 tires.
That should put you with enough car to beat an M3. However, a good driver can make all the difference.
S4:
1/4 mile: 13.8 @100.6
0-60: 5.6
60-0: 118 ft
lateral: .88g
700ft. Slalom: 68.0 mph
Lap time:1.39.98
M3:

0-60: 5.8
60-0: 113 ft
lateral: .93g
700ft. Slalom: 72.3 mph

Vishnu Stage 0 EVO
1/4 mile: 13.1 @105.6

Your friend with the 2004 M3 is a bully. Look for someone with a Stage IV+ who would like to take the challenge and you just sit down and enjoy the show

I deffiniatly agree, but I was hitting on the "rich bully" factor and his selection of cars. My point was that putting $30k into a WRX and therefor matching the price of a new M3 not only grossly beats the M3 but puts the WRX into the performance catagory of cars that cost 2x - 3x as much as the M3. I guess what I'm saying is the WRX rocks...
The missing question here is: can either of you drive?
well i think im a pretty decent driver, but he has the advantage because his car has the sequencial gearbox. shifts with a press of a button. all i got to do is practice more and im pretty sure i can shift fast enough.

A Stage 4 (or VS Stage 2) car setup should beat the M3 in a straight line without too much trouble.
The "I'll put the extra $30k your car cost into mine and kick your butt!" is SO
though. You don't just buy performance #'s with your $. You buy so many other tangible and many intangible things (cachet, etc.) that it's not just a question of hard data.
If that were the case I'd take an old rusted out Corvair from the junkyard, drop the $999,995 less than an Enzo it cost into it and beat it down the dragstrip FOR SURE!
It's the same reason why I don't get flustered when somebody from the "J Body" or Civic forums gets all huffy and says "If I drop $20k into my Cavalier/Sunfire/Civic HX on top of the $5k I bought if for used I could kick your 12-second WRX's butt!".
C'est la vie, it's all in what you want.
