Jun, Helix, Crawford, Crower all make cams for the wrx. I think a lot of people forget about this mod because everyone wants a bigger Turbo. I'm thinking about getting the Helix because of the price.

No. People don't bother with cams becasue they are very expensive. WRX/STi needs 4 cams and labor to install them will get pretty close to 1500 or so.

For EVO's you get a set of cams for 400 and another 200 to install them.

That's why.

Turbo's are the same thing. It can cost just as much if not more for a turbo and install. What I meant to say is turbos are a more popular upgrade on our cars.

No. I disagree.

Lets pretent 4 cams = turbo in terms of price.

To install cams, you gotta pull the motor out. To install the turbo, you don't. That's where labor $ comes in. I would charge no less than $1000 to install cams.

Turbo's are more popular, because it is better bang for the buck. Cams will never give you that much HP. Cams are more of a fine tuning part, or a part to buy, if you have bought everything else already...

Still is cheaper to get all cams plus install than most rotated mount plus install if I go buy your 1000 dollar install. Like I said it's not a popular mod since everyone is turbo crazy and they're easy to install. Not trying to argue but it's not a popular mod for our cars unless you like to track your car or a motorhead like me. But you have to remember along with the bigger turbos comes all the supporting mods and their cost also, which far surpass the price of cams and their install.

We would charge about $1500 for a cam install by itself so it would make more sense to do it with a 2.5L shortblock install since you'll be pulling the motor anyways. Also Helix makes great 264 cams w/ Titanium springs, retainers, and spring seat locators for $999 shipped. And they do make excellent power. The more modded your engine and the bigger your turbo is, the more you'll be able to utilize your cams (or vice versa). So for that price, it definitely is cheaper than tuning and installing a rotated setup but the gains won't be as good a value.

I think something that hasn't been touched on is the fact that the 4G63 is a much more efficient motor than the EJ205. For example, where a Subaru might run over 20 degrees of advance up top, an Evo might only need 4-5 degrees of advance to see similar gains. In other words (or very crudely) 1 degree of advance on an Evo is sort of like 5 degrees on a Subaru. That means if you add cams to a Subaru, the gains aren't going to be as drastic as they are on an Evo.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about cams.

Thanks,

Geoff
