Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Question CAI vs. SRI

I have now a short ram HKS intake. But looking to buy a CAI from AEM or Injen.

I just want to know which is best for me.

My mods now are:

STI catback (non-res)
HKS BOV
HKS Short Ram Intake
STI TMIC (soon)
Access Post (soon)

Let me know which intake fits me best.
Thanks

If your California county requires bi-annual smog inspections, you might consider getting the factory SPT cold-air intake and heat shield. Subaru claims that in testing they found that it is within a few degrees of the factory snorkel intake air temperature whether in traffic or in motion, adds some power in conjunction with the SPT catback (or equivalent), and carries a CARB Exemption Order number for California (and 50-state) smog legal use.

I see Wingless Wonder. But I will try to get the heat shield for my HKS intake. As for my cat back exhaust it will be OEM STI. I'm going to get the AEM intake to make a custom intake with HKS and heat shield.

Do you think the cops will say anything?

I'm not sure what you mean by using the AEM and HKS intakes (both?) and a heat shield. I think that the AEM may have a CARB E.O. number for the WRX but it must be affixed to the intake in the form of a tag or a label, or else you must have documentation in your vehicle that states that it is CARB exempt from AEM. You can't mix and match parts from different intakes - that isn't allowed by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

I have no idea how strictly the police in your county enforce smog compliance. Different agencies handle it differently. There are two concerns - one is being pulled over for whatever reason and having your car looked at for smog compliance. The other concern is whether your car can pass the visual part of the bi-annual smog inspection given in most urban California counties. My '02 WRX has not yet been required to undergo the first smog inspection but it will pass the visual and sniffer test because it looks all stock underhood.
