looking for the best all around turbo that is cost effective. i think the vf34 is at the head of the pack but seems really expensive, anyone know where to locate a cheap one, well not over 1000 shall i say, ohh and what car is the donor of this turbo anyway. the vf 39 is up there but seems to be unfavored by wrx owners. doesn't this come off the US STi. there also seems to be a heavy favoring of the "g" turbos like the 16g or 18g. unsure which seems best between these or other g type turbos. also what is the deadbolt thing about, and why is it good if it is?

There's no right answer. It all depends on what the owner wants. Some (very few) people even prefer getting the most out of the stock TD04 because of it's quick spool time.
Personally, I don't like sacrificing spool time for top end. I'll take good low and midrange response over top end every day. But, I don't take my car to the track either.
And the VF34 is very similar to the VF39. The 34 has a slightly better top end, but the 39 has a slightly quicker spool. The only reason to prefer the VF34 is because the used VF39s tend to have cracks on them.

you know of any places that i could find either for a decent price of about $600-$800 , or even cheaper if you know of any. I can only seem to find prices around $1300 and i dont think that those are new. i could get a new one from a different company for that price, right?
gruppe-s is one of the vendors on i-club and their vf-34's are $839 shipped. You can also get the package deal with the sti injectors, fuel pump, and vf34 turbo for $1275 shipped. Hope this will help you out.

ok, well im still thinking bout which turbo would be best for me to install on my 02'wrx. I hear the 34 makes more high end power but lacks due to spool time, and the 39 has a better spool but drops off top end pull. I think that the vf39 might be a better turbo for me due to my desire to touge. i was wondering about the difference of the ball bearing 34 and the 39. what type of bearings does the 39 use, and is more or less reliable than the 34 cause of it. if someone knows good specs for both turbos please let me know. seems like the 39 doesnt really have specs out there so please help. If anyone knows where i can get a 34 or 39 for $700-$800 please let me know.
I have no experience with upgrading turbos and I haven't done a lot of research but so far I think I will end up going with the TD05H-16G from deadbolt (free rebuilds for life). If that doesn't suit your needs Deadbolt has many other options.

if you want high end power, I would look into the VF22. my bugeye was putting out 250whp with just VF22 and exhaust on the power robbing Mustang dyno (stock STi get 220whp on this dyno.) The power curve is awesome on the graph, it starting to pull really hard from 4K all the way to red line.

i would like to build this car as a track worthy daily driver, a turbo with quick spool w/ some high end pull is preffered. dont want a drag turbo that kicks at high rpm only or too small of a turbo that loses wind at 6500-7000rpm.
i think you'd be well served with an evo3 16g.
quick spool, blows some good air, can be rebuilt, reasonably priced. the evo3 wheel makes a big difference.
fwiw, clark turner likes them too, and regularly tunes them to 300-325whp.

Not sure if this is the best place but JSC has them.
