pro's: cheap, easy to install, easy to operate
con's: have to adjust boost from under the hood, not as convenient as EBC, not as pretty as EBC
That's what I can think of.

get a dual stage boos controller from Turbo XS.

I think its around $160.

You can have a dily driver setting, and than you flip a switch and it goes to the racing setting (higher boost whatewver you adjust)

Best bang for your buck.

With a MBC, you increase boost but not the fueling. This can lead to a lean mixture condition, indicated by excessively high exhaust gas temperature. To be safe, use sparingly in conjunction with a boost gauge. An EGT gauge would also be a nice thing to have (and use).

It's cheap and relatively easy to install but isn't a good substitute for engine management such as a good reflash from Cobb Tuning or EcuTek.

I've had the GFB manual boost controller ($50) set to 1bar, all cats in place (for now) for over a year now. I love it, even set to barely over stock levels, since the boost comes up so quickly now.

Wingless Wonder summed it up nicely, but I'd add that a dangerous lean condition is only likely in a part-throttle/full boost situation. At full throttle (over 2/3) manifold pressure dictates fueling rather than a set map in the ECU, so while it will be leaner than stock, it shouldn't be dangerously so.

Keep the boost under 15.5-16.0 psi (in 3rd or 4th gear) max in at events, lower on a daily basis, watch for part throttle/full boost situations (very easy to learn to modulate the throttle-it's second nature after driving it a couple of times), and you should be fine.

And don't even consider getting one without a boost gauge.

EGT exhaust gas temp ..

I've used a mbc on my dsm and i liked it when i was close to stock boost levels, but when i replaced my turbo i replaced my mbc with a ebc. If you don't plan on increasing your boost levels too much an mbc might work out for you. but if your in the first stages of one mean, crazy fast rex buy an ebc, because eventually you will probally want one.

I have a WRX friend who uses a MBC and has no problems with it. IMO, you should just do it and if you want to upgrade later you can.
