Custom Manual 2 Stage Boost Controller...
Hi Guys,
I am brand new to the club and new to the WRX scene as of October last year. I have started to mod my ride with a couple things so far...AEM CAI, GFB BOV, and a GFB atomic boost controller along with autometer guages.
My question is, has anyone here made their own 2 stage manual controller? What I want to do is have a boost controller with the same function as the turbo XS 2 stage but hopefully be able to build it cheaper. I was thinking of a design and I am not sure how to make it work. Basically I was thinking that I could have to contoller's, oone being the stock boost controller and the second being my GFB running on parallel vacuum lines and at either end have electrically controlled solenoids that are Y's with one side open when not turned on and then opening the opposite side and closing the original side when activated. Basically making a switch activated vacuum line switch. One of these would be required at each end to inhibit any circulation to the stock boost controller when active. So it would run at 8 pounds when not on and run at a preset level when on, say 15 pounds when on. Now I'm thinking this should be pretty simple to make except for one part...the solenoids....what kind to use? I was contemplating and trying to think if a nitrous solenoid would work for this. If anyone here knows please help me out, I think this would be a cool mod to make from scratch.
Thanks,
Jameson

Hidden Dragon, I made a 2 stage manual boost controller but it is completely manual and must be changed from beneath the hood. It basically consists of two brass valves from home depot. When they are both open I'm running the factory boost controller. Both closed I'm running my mbc. It takes about 30 seconds to switch over and parts cost about $10. For my purposes that works perfectly. Since my wife is the primary driver of the car I keep it on factory boost for her and switch over to the mbc when I drive.
I know it's not quite what you had in mind but it works for me. I know you can buy some solenoids somewhere and have an automatic system but it didn't seem worth the trouble to me after reading some threads on the topic. A lot more expensive and not too reliable from what I could tell (or the people doing the mods weren't very experiened). If you want an automatic 2 stage probably best to buy one or settle for a manual system.

I had exacty the same idea. I havent implemented it yet but I will tell you what you will need. First you will need two solonoid valves, simply because you want to completely isloate the mbc from the factory ebc. So you will need to cordinate that when you flip the switch, both are either on or off. The types of slolonoid valves you would need are electronic 3-way solonoid valves. I have yet to be able to find some locally, but they do exsist and may need to be bought from the internet. Once you are done plumbing jsut run an electric switch to inside the cabin. The most difficult part is actually finding these electronic solonoids.
