A quick question; Looking at my engine block, right behind the turbo outlet and cast into the block is a rectangular opening that allows access to the flywheel. From the factory, is there a cover for this opening or is it supposed to be open exposing the flywheel? This is driving me crazy as I can't find a reference to a cover anywhere in my subaru manuals.

 

I don't have my digital camera handy, but the opening is really easy to spot. It's located on the passenger side of the engine block, right behind the turbo outlet (to the intercooler).

 

I have attached the best picture that I could take at the time. In the upper left corner of the picture is the turbo and outlet hose leading to the intercooler. In the bottom middle of the picture is the throttle cable brackets that attach to the throttle body. You can see the bottom right hand corner of the opening directly in the middle of the picture. You can even make out the rusty flywheel through the opening. Could someone take a look at your engine and tell me what is covering this opening? I need to order that cover so no more moisture gets in there.

Yes, I am the original owner. I had the engine out of the vehicle over the winter to replace a cylinder head. I am wondering if a cover fell off that I didn't see or if I just plain lost the cover. I suppose it could have fallen in with the flywheel. If someone could just run out and look at your engine, it would help me a lot.

 

Your cover must of fell off because i still have mine on there. Go order one from subaru parts.com

Timing Hole Plug, P/N 11413AA033
