'95 Legacy Twin Turbo Conversion!!
Hello!
i have a project that i'm looking at and i was hoping someone could help me find info on the modifications/problems with putting a single turbo EJ20T(DOHC) ~230-245hp into a '95 Legacy Wagon. it's a great car and i want to get a new engine and tranny, they are both going bad (i can only use gears 1-3-5!!), and i thought, "let's make it more powerful." so i can get that engine for only $650!!! ( http://www.nippon-motors.com/subaru.htm ) i talked to the guy, and though they are used from japan with like 40k miles, and include the steering pumps and alternater and a/c compressor and all that good stuff, i don't think i'd need too much more money than
engine $650
tranny $650
labor $1000
other parts $400
-------
$2700
and that's like a new car! i'm thinking i could have the cv joints and wheel bearings replaced while i'm at it.
the only thing i'm worried about is if/how the engine (2.0L w/ 1 turbo) will fit? and if there's no problem.... what about the EJ20TT(DOHC)(2.0L w/ 2 turbos) $850 ~280hp!! HA HA HA (evil laugh)
this cost is about the same value of the car and yes, i know... but i want to do it, so help it out
i'll post pics as after it's done.
thanks
Chris

By other parts you mean the crossmember, wiring, exhaust, radiator, ECU, the rear diff if different from your orignal rear diff, the rear axles depending on the rear diff, fuel pump, a shop that can wire in the ECU to the US harness. Those would be some of the little extras that end up blowing the budget on conversions and turbo projects. So you will want to keep all of that in mind.

That is what i'm asking, really, does anyone know what changes have to be made in order to use the turbo engine?
What subaru made engine/s can i install without changing the crossmember and radiator and diff, (why would i want to change that if i don't have to?)
and please update my estimated cost
thanks!

The rear diff would need to be changed if the gear ratio of the new M/T is different from your orignal gear ratio. Otherwise you might damage your transfercase in the new M/T. You could just swap the crossmember in your car. Its not that hard to do if you use two floor jacks you can just set it on the jacks and raise it up into position. The PS pump from the new motor can still be used along with your orignal PS lines. Between the PS line banjo connection to the PS pump and the PS pump there is a piece that you can unscrew from your orignal PS pump and use on your EJ20 PS pump so that the banjo connections are the same size. Otherwise the EJ20 connection will be a larger diameter then the banjo bolt on the EJ25 connection. The A/C pump on your car will work on the EJ20 but you will want to swap you mounting brackets. The radiator you will want to swap anyways since the WRX radiator is twice as thick as the non turbo models.

as far as the ej20tt is concerned, as far as i know its made for right hand drive and i dont think it can be done, but you might be able to swap some of the stuff over to the other side to make up for this. i thought about dropping that engine into my 95 legacy too but found that out. instead im probably going with an ej22t.

Can somebody explain why it being built for a RHD would matter since a EJ20 in the JDM WRX is a RHD and we've installed them in LHD Imprezas. I know the TT won't work in the Impreza but why not the Legacy? Other then the linkage for the steering and the master cylinder the engine bays are the same.

Just a FYI, you will likely get a much better response on this sort of thing in the Aftermarket Turbo forum. Many people here in the Factory Turbo forum have no experience with this sort of thing precisely because their car came with a turbo from the factory.
This is the whole reason the forums exists seperately.
