500 miles too soon for 1st oil change?

I haven't actually checked the oil yet, but I've smelled no oil. I have smelled something like plastic burning ...
I am getting crap gas mileage. But I heard this also goes away once the motor is broke in. It probably doesn't help that I'm constantly cycling the RPM between 2K and 4K.

I don't see a point in changing oil @ 500 miles. I waited until 1500 and then changed immediately. I did not start using synthetic until ~ 5000 miles. (Mobil 1 5w30)
