'04 WRX noises

so today this kook in his ION wasn't letting me in so i had to smoke him. when i did i heard this rattle or grind or maybe a crunch. this has happened before but it's starting to worry me. it only happens under heavy acceleration especially when i drop into 2nd or 3rd. has anyone else had this happen. i know boxer engines are quirky but i want to be sure. here's the facts:

MY04 WRX 5 door 24,000 miles
Automatic trans
Pulley kit
drop in filter

any help as always greatly appreciated

If it does sound like that it is most likely detonation (knock) and if it is loud enough for you to hear thats not good. You need to take it easy on the car untill you have it checked out and fixed so you dont toast your engine. Here is a link to a Yahoo search on detonation http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=det...t-173&toggle=1.

Have you changed the plugs or done anything else to the car right before this started to happen?

you might have a dirty fuel filter that's starving the injectors. not enough fuel gets to the injectors fast enough when you punch it like that.

wastegate flutter maybe? is it coming from the passenger side of the car, almost like it's under the dash?

when accelerating to pass in an automatic, the engine is not under as high of a load as in a 5 speed. the auto kicks down to 2nd or 3rd as the original poster said. i used to get really bad WG flutter with my stock turbo.

this last idea is way off in left field, but it could be this: http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1205
my dash used to rattle very bad when the engine was revving high, after doing this mod it went away.

it's definatly not the dash. it's almost like an amplified crunch that the AT makes when down shifting. it doesn't sound like its on the right side. it's going in tommorow ilet you know

Does it happen when you go WOT or at part throttle? If WOT, then its likely detonation, if partial throttle, I'd say wastegate flutter.

Read this thread: https://www.i-club.com/forums/bay-area-15/crazy-wastegate-fluttering-76894/

to figure out if its wastegate flutter and how to fix it. You could also try the procedure to rule WG flutter out as a problem.

you may need a reflash. for me it turned out to be the gas. i was running chevron's premium when this noise started and i was told to switch to union 76 premium. tech says WRX's like this gas better. no more sounds so far
