odd knock issue, utec, vf34, etc.

So I've never seen or heard of this problem before. I'm getting knock in the 5-20 TPS range, with pretty much no positive boost. However, when I gas it, I can take it up to 17 PSI through the normal RPM range and not have any problem.

Recent changes include: STi 6 speed (800 miles ago), VF34 (150 miles), Helix TMIC (150 miles).

This is happening in the 0 to 20 load range, so which is where I have timing switch over from ECU to ##'s, so I thought my timing numbers were too high. I reduced them by 3, and still had the same problem. I changed 0, 10, and 20 to ECU, and now it seems the problem is exaggerated even more, as if the ECU timing was screwed up! So I reset my ECU. Twice. Same problem. So I thought, maybe its bad gas? So I filled up from half a tank of 91 octane (I'm in California) to a full tank with 100 octane (so 95 octane would be a safe-to-assume minimum). Now normally I feel like there is a difference with the new gas nearly right away, but I only drove maybe 4 miles since I filled up with 100 and I still had the same problem.

Any ideas?

Sometimes misfires at lower RPMs are mistaken as knock. This can be due to low RPM and/or low load during rich moments. What are your AFRs? (And then, of course, there's the mystery of "rich knock" ). Also, remember timing increases EGTs. Lower it too much and your headaches swing the other direction.

Post some logs.

I'm surprised you usually feel a difference so soon. 4 Miles isn't much. Sounds like enough to drain the fuels lines on a good WOT run, but not much more

I go through periods w/ the UTEC where I get weird knocks, that are fairly repeatable. Then they go away. I kill my performance trying to identify and weed them out. Then I say, "fluck it" weeks later and put my original maps back in... which work just fine.

Oh the joy.

One day, now that I have no more time to continuously play with my UTEC, I'll hobble over to Mike and have him ECUTEK it. Of course, this'll be after dealing with my new job, new home and a bun in the oven... I drive my car maybe 4 or 5 times a month now Fortunately my "beater" is a 215hp C320

ya ive been debating for a few weeks now about switching over to the cobb accessport or whatever its called. i did a good number on my 4 wheel beater when i blew the motor going up 17, hit the guardrail after a slow spin and got it on its side. i think the motor had around 150,000 hard miles on it when it finally went. my 2 wheel beater is fine but sucks for the winter, so the scoob is getting most of the miles these days.
