Intake tip
Intake tip
Just posting something worth while for a change.
The intakes can be tricky. Most of the time they (companys) lean out the air fuel ratio (A/F) by increasing the diameter of the pipe. The unmetered air passes under the MAF sensor and makes the engine run leaner. This of course increases horse power but because the ECU is compensating for the unmetered air, it ends up running in circles trying to dial in the correct A/F. Although you are getting more horsepower your engine isn't running as smooth as it should be. You can compare this with some one who has a stock unit. Focus on the smoothness that you feel and then ride one with a intake. you'll see the difference.
The only reason that you should need a intake is if you install and Front mount innercooler or running crazy injectors that require extremely high air flow. The stock unit can handle up to 340 hp. The FMIC piping normally routes where the stock intake is. This requires you to remove the stock unit and install a ram air or cold air. Other than that you really don't need one.
Injen, K&N,Perrin and APS (all second generations only) work well, but you should use K&N's RC-9350 filter head. The others filters are too big. It's a tiny filter but it works. I used it on 2.0L and 2.8L engines. It allows the correct amount of air flow.
If you are going to keep the stock unit and you are thinking about the K&N replacement filter you need to think about this. The filters are reuseable but they require a lot of maintenance. The filter has to be coated with just the right amount of oil. Too much and it chokes the filter not enough and the filter doesent catch the dirt. You best bet is to buyt two and rotate them out, cleaning one when you have time. That way you can pop one in and clean the other when you have time.
I liked the stock filter because I'm lazy and didn't want to take the time to oil up and so forth. So if your lazy like me you better off using the throw away.
I've always preached efficient power. Don't worry about the whp number look at how efficiently fast your car can be. It will pay off in the long run.
Well, I hoped that helped out a little, Now back to the BS posting.

P.S. From time to time I'll post some food for thought, so keep you eyes open.

What about foam filter?
Thanks Ichinobu, you sure knows more than me.
That been said about air intake, what about foam type drop in filter that fits in the stock air filter location? Something similar like a perrin panel air filter type?
I would assume you would recommend, like so many others have, to not waste $ on a cold-air intake like Injen? (I just heard ppl said it doesn't do crap)
Thanks for ur recommendations & suggestions again

I run an Injen because of I have a FMIC. If it didn't I would still use the stock box. If you do have an Injen already just change the filter to the K&N rc-9350 and you will see a world of difference. That big *** filter that it comes with just lets in too much air in for the intake.

I mentioned buying two K&N drops , because you can clean one while you run the other. It really takes time to clean it properly and we normally want to change it and go. Having the extra one allows you to do that.

You may change out the paper ones more often but you don't have the hassle with the cleaning and oiling process. The new filter out of the box is cleaned perfectly.

This is fine for the race track cars, because thay run once a week or once a month. We drive everyday and in traffic, that is a big difference in what type of dirt the filter will come in contact with.
I run the Perrin foam filter, and I have to disagree with these statements. I used mine for over 20,000 miles before I checked the MAF, and it was pristine, no signs of oil or dust build-up. The filer gets REALLY DIRTY, almost black in the center, but only on the intake side; I don't see anything making it through the filter.
