Idle Air Control. It's a little stepper motor that opens a valve that allows air to bypass the throttle body. It's to help control the exact amount of air going through the motor while it's turning slowly. It's the thing that allowed cars to idle so quietly you don't even know they're running sometimes. It's right next to your throttle body. If you can find the Haynes manual it should have instructions for troubleshooting bad idle.
