DIY ECU Tuning
Does anyone have any advice for someone who wants to get into ecu tuning? Are there any engine management simulation programs out there or do you learn from trial and error?
In terms of a fully customizeable engine management system, do you need a totally new ecu or are there packages that allow you to modify the stock ecu without sending it off to someone?
If there are other threads with this info, please let mek now.
Thanks.

Get a UTEC and a wideband O2 setup. Trial and error all the way, baby. Or you can just get it tuned professionally. The UTEC is a piggyback of sorts that causes the car to lie to the ECU and visa versa.. The nice part about it is that you can let the ECU be in control when you want it to (like during idle or low throttle). Its not going to give you the versatility of a TECH3 and its not going to give you the safe behavioral features of the stock ECU like an ECUTek flash will. But with time and patience you can add a lot of power to even an otherwise stock WRX and learn a lot about tuning. Its really a racing computer. It can work fine as a daily driver, but like I said, it doesn't have the one-the-fly computer controlled features of the stock ECU. Infact by its nature, it blocks them. It really is a what-you-tune-is-what-you-get setup. I.e. It won't alter timing for you automatically on cold days, etc., like a reflash. But if you want to learn, its the way to go.
If you don't want to learn, get an ECUTek reflash.

Good topic RemoRedWRX.
Coming from the Honda world and having tuning rights to the Hondata system, etc I've always wanted to do some tuning on the WRX. With that said the UTEC and Delta Dash seem to be the best system to go with for someone who wants to do their own tuning. There are a ton of users, so maps aren't hard to find, and the technical expertise on the boards is huge. That's the system I'll be going with. Of course, it helps to have Pat Richard's shop an hour from my house.
