AP requirements

I have an 02 stock WRX but I'm looking towards getting an AccessPort, or perhaps a cable for open source tuning.

What exactly are the requirements for an 02 for Stage 1 and 2?

I have read that Stage 1 can run with no mods and 2 just needs a downpipe. Is this true?

A link to this info would be great as well
thanks
