only 02/03 WRX AP's are interchangeable. The rest are specific to the year.
The new AP will, however, be universal so every unit will work on any car.

04 and 05 APs are compatible with each other...bad sentence...04 works on 05, 05 works 04(even worse). It just requires a flash(update of the actual AP while plugged into your favorite computer) so if you buy an 04 AP you can update it to the 05, and can revert it from 05 to 04. Those software can be downloaded for free...unless cobb removed them...let me know if so and if you need it.

I only know because I am a cheapo, I bought an 04 AP; wider selection (04 and 05) in the used market leads to lower prices. Especially when I bought it last year, many more 04 APs that consistently went for a little less than the "brand new" 05 at the time.
Also, Ed, I've been reading about you setting up shop in Berkeley...how's that going? Happened yet?
