WRX going in for Transmission Issues
WRX going in for Transmission Issues
I have my '02 WRX scheduled to go in for all of next week at North End Subaru in Mass for high rev transmission grinding in 1st, 4th, 5th, and also reverse. I know the guys there pretty well and the tech took it out and said he was able to duplicate the problem. The service manager said that I should be covered under warrenty this issue and that I shouldn't worry. None the less, they are tearing down the entire tranny for a problem that may not be covered or be severe enough to be fixed. They said a minimum of 600 just to look at it if nothing is wrong so I'm a bit nervous. Has anyone had similer issues with their tranny and had it covered under warrenty?
If you are under 60,000 miiles your tranny is covered, how could their be any question about that? I had mine rebuilt at about 45,000 mi for bad first gear synchros and am taking it in now at 59,500 mi. for occational grinding into 3rd and 4th, on upshifts and downshifts. If they won't fix it under warrenty I am going to sell it. Problem is I don't know what I would get to replace it. I will have to assume at this point that all WRX 5-speeds are going to have tranny problems after a lot of miles.
The service manager (who I'm a bit chummy with) said that if the problems stem from abuse/misuse then it won't be covered under warrenty. Who determines this? Is it the tech who works on it or is there some Subaru Warrenty Adjuster that comes around? I've heard some pretty bad horror stories about people paying thousands out of pocket for issues that should have been covered.

dude, if you have less than 60k mi on your scooby it should be covered. mine goes in on june 7th for new syncos, 1,2,4,5. i am not hard on my car it's just that our tranny's are not that strong. if that dealership will not do it go to another scooby dealer or you could try to get ahold of subaru directly. i think that the person that determines it is the subaru represenative in your particular area that deals with the dealership. i talk to the manager at the dealership cuz i wanted a new tranny and he said that subaru could not just replace that tranny only the problem or broke items. hope this helps. also deny any ripping and tearing in your car. they know we all get on it once and a while but you tranny should last longer for 2 yrs and 60k miles. P
I spoke with the tech assigned to my car today, he said that he can't get it to grind in 4th and 5th. He did say however that first was a bit buggered up. I thought first was fine but what do I know... I just drive the damn thing every day. I told him to pull it apart anyway to take care of the 1st gear problem and to see what else he can see. What can I do? This is sounding more and more expensive by the minute.
I finally got my car back yesterday. Apparently all of the synchros were shot. I really don't know how this happened, I can't imagine these transmissions are so weak they conk out at 40,000. In any case, it was all warrented. If it haden't been covered, it would have been close to 2000 bucks. After they put the tranny all back together I told them not to fill it with the standard stuff and that I would get them some synchromesh. You should've seen the look on their faces when I showed up with 4 quarts of GM brand tranny fluid... In any case, they put it in. I can shift in first at 15 mph and everything feels better than when I purchased the car. Thanks North End Subaru and thanks subawho for the recommendation.
