Driving home from work today (2k2 2.5RS) i missed a shift, man I really gotta get a short shifter.

When i got it in gear the clutch pedal became completlely loose, and the clutch was slipping. for several minutes i could smeel the clutch.

Now obviously the clutch wasn't fully engaged, but can anyone tell me why that happened?
